"We have a new pastor from the Washington, D.C., area, and he's having to readjust to California culture because where he comes from, it's a little more formal," says Cheryl Klem, a spokeswoman for Coast Hills. "Just (last week) we implemented for our staff a new dress code that requires they do not wear beach flip-flops to work. There's a fine line, and we want to honor the culture of California and the casual style, but we also, as a staff, want to lead the way and present an image of reverence for coming to church.
"At same time," Klem added, "we welcome anybody to church; we don't care what they are wearing on their feet."
Does your church have a set dress code either for the staff during the week, or for staff on weekends? How has it changed in the last five years?
A sad day has arrived for the staff members of Coast Hills Church in Aliso Viejo, CA after the church decided to deny them the right to wear ‘beach flip flops’ to work. This, according to an article published this week in the OC Register: When pastors set the fashion tone wearing Hawaiian shirts and deck shoes, can a comfortable congregation be far behind? Attire at many of the big churches that cater to families - like the Calvary churches, Saddleback Church in Lake Forest and Coast Hills Community Church in Aliso Viejo - looks nothing like that of yesteryear…

I’m not sure I whole-heartedly agree with banning flip flops in Cali. I live in Alabama and pastor a Vineyard church and I myself dress casual. I guess I would lean toward what kind of church you pastor. If you’re on staff at a high church, then dress accordingly. But if you are in Cali, in a church that welcomes casual dress, dress casual. The mentality that says, “If I dress casually, then I work casually” is dumb.

Wow, what energy behind such a benign topic. My dad grew up as a depression child and sometimes holey jeans meant those that were mended before worn to church. If a person prepares oneself for worship what does it matter what they are wearing.
A couple of years ago a young man that I was mentoring finally left his post as a local gang leader just for a day and attended a church where I was working with youth. As he entered I was shocked and warmed that he came wearing his fanciest colors. An older gentleman in the choir could not stand the fact that my friend did not remove his hat in the sanctuary so this well intentioned person proceeded to walk down and encourage my friend to remove his hat or leave. It was his best hat! He had prepared himself for God that day and was making a turn toward a God that loves him. My friend left that day and was shot and killed a few days later. I stopped wearing ties and other oppressive clothing that day.
I would never work in a “church” where the focus was on dress codes and other such nonsense. Jesus outlined what is important and what the focus should be on.
Matthew 22:36-40
Jesus was ask—- “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” [37] He said to him, “‘you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the greatest and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

One of the blessings of retirement from the secular world was no more dress code. I have never understood what difference it really made in individuals. We’re Free Methodist, very large congregation with a couple tradional services and two well-attended very contemporary. Although I haven’t been in shorts or flip flops on Sunday…many here are. On Monday when I come in to my office at the church. I am usually (Summer here) in shorts, cartoon t-shirt and barefoot. Comfortable and I get the job done. A favorite t-shirt states: “Being in a business suit makes you look important”. It always brings suppportive comments.
