Bob Jones III Backs Mitt Romney
Bob Jones III, chancellor of the Christian fundamentalist school named for his family, is endorsing Republican Mitt Romney for president.  Romney’s campaign confirmed Jones’ endorsement Tuesday.  “We’re proud to have Dr. Jones’ support and look forward to working with him to communicate Governor Romney’s message of conservative change to voters,” Romney spokesman William Holley said in a statement.  Jones said his endorsement came after he decided Romney would do the most to represent the average conservative American.  “As a Christian I am completely opposed to the doctrines of Mormonism,” Jones told the newspaper. “But I’m not voting for a preacher. I’m voting for a president. It boils down to who can best represent conservative American beliefs, not religious beliefs.” SOURCE

    Juanita Now Needs $239,000!
Earlier this week, we shared the video of Juanita Bynum’s plea for $200,000 for her new lakefront ‘threshing floor’.  Well, now she needs an extra $39,000 or else her 4.5 million dollar home will be auctioned off at the country courthouse.  (That’s the amount due in back taxes, interest, and penalties).  According to tax records, the 6,748-square-foot house sits on about 24 acres.  SOURCE

Will Slice Be Back or Not?
Ingrid wrote yesterday that she’s determining which old posts to republish and which ones to not:  “Only those with some ongoing value are being reposted,” she wrote.  That should make the reposting project go much quicker.  (Sorry Ingrid, I couldn’t resist).

Pastor is Too Sexy for His Church...
According to this video over at CNN, a church’s “Red Hot Sex” mailer went too far. The pastor said, “If I’d put ‘holiness’ here, or ‘have a good marriage’, no one would have ‘showed up’.  The pastor continues, “Did I mean to offend your kids?  Absolutely not. And again I’ll apologize.” He also said if he had to do it all over again… he would.  On the other side of the issue, a good question posed by someone who got the mailer:  “Why don’t the take the (literally) thousands they spent on mailouts and put that directly into the community as opposed to having some kind of shock value to their ministry?” What do you think?  Here’s the link to the CNN video... HT to ChurchMarketingSucks for the story.

This Will Get Ingrid, OldTruth, and Rev. Silva Upset...

St. Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia, S.C., is distributing Rick Warren’s “The Purpose Driven Life” on a very broad scale. On Sept. 25, church members gave a copy of The Purpose Driven Life to every prisoner in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. They gave away some 24,000 copies. Greg Barr, pastor of St. Andrews, came up with the idea after his involvement with a 30-year-old bible study group at a prison in Columbia. They had studied another of Warren’s books, 40 Days of Purpose, together and wanted to expand it. More here.

Wow… The Existence of the Star of Bethlehem Has Been Proven!
Just check out this press release I received earlier this week:  For centuries, historians, scientists and scholars have debated the existence of the Star of Bethlehem in the Biblical telling of Christ’s birth. Now the existence of this celebrated, yet debated, Star has been proven by Texas lawyer and professor, Rick Larson, in the documentary, “The Star of Bethlehem,” available on DVD Oct. 23 at national online retailers and local Christian bookstores, distributed by Mpower Pictures and Genius Products… “God began leading me on a journey and unveiling answers to me beyond my own understanding,” Larson said. “That God would ask someone not trained in astronomy to do this still amazes me.” (I guess God does still work in mysterious ways).

That’s it for today… Have a great day!

Some days it's hard to determine what to cut out of the buzz... today: America's top fundamentalist endorses a mormon for President; Juanita's 4.5 million dollar mansion on the auction block for back taxes; Slice's return; A church's 'red hot sex' mailer causes controversy; 24,000 prisoners the proud recipient of their own copy of The Purpose Driven Life; and the existence of the Star of Bethlehem has been proven! Being a pastor who is in fact too sexy for his church,  I think we get more market value out of community investment than direct /junk mail. It’s a good question as to what will leave a more lasting impression. Inarguably, the postcard shock will create more buzz than cleaning a vacant lot (see, it made CNN and, more importantly, MMI). In the long run, will notoriety open more doors for the gospel than good will? Will it be enough of a conversation starter to open the door for conversations on the gospel’s relevance?

Bob Jones III + Mitt Romney?  Didn’t Bob Jones refer to Mormonism as a cult that masquerades as Christian?  So now he would prefer someone from a cult over someone pro-choice?  Hmmm…

      and

Bob Jones University lost its tax-exempt status in 1970 for refusing to admit African-Americans. The school then changed its policy but still prohibited any interracial dating or marriage. The university still banned interracial dating in 1998 when James Landrith, who is white, tried to apply to the school even though he is married to an African American woman and was turned down for that reason.   Then in 2000 Bob Jones said the policy was based on the university’s belief “that God made the races separate for his own purpose, and it is wrong to break down the barriers God erected, that it could lead to dangerous ‘one-worldism’’.

When asked about George Bush campaigning at Bob Jones U. even the rather conservative Pat Robertson said, “Bob Jones has been known as a rather extreme place. I mean, any of us in the Christian World understand that they are pretty harsh, you know. ... These people are pretty far out to the right.”

So is this even an endorsement that Romney will really welcome?

Politics is such a beast. Not really sure what who endorsing who means any more….

As to the mailer? Well, for one - that doesn’t make the pastor too sexy or even sexy… IMO. I think being out and about in the community is always better than monies spent on mailouts.. Yet.. on the other hand, it’s not my church is it? If we’re to know the heartbeat of our towns/cities… a mailout to get individuals curious enough to dawn our doors might go further than a Saturday spent giving out water bottles.
