Today’s Buzz: Jerry Falwell to Get His Own Street; Vision and Building; and ‘Give Me Bac

    Jerry Falwell Blvd.?
Campbell County supervisors unanimously approved a motion to support a bill to rename a portion of U.S. 460 after the Rev. Jerry Falwell.  The renamed portion would pass through Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church to the intersection of U.S. 460 and U.S. 29 near the airport.  More here.

    Elders:  Allies or Adversaries?
I have to admit, this one caught my eye since I recently became an elder at my church.  This is an audio message from Bob Russell (former SP at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville).  I wonder what all of you would say your gut reaction would be… are your elders (or board members) your allies or your adversaries?  Why?

Give Me Back My Money, TBN
Trinity Broadcasting’s South African operation has been accused by the family of a mentally ill person of refusing to repay his pension money he donated to the station.  The family of Manjo Maphuma, a former Gauteng policeman who now lives in Mdantsane and has been diagnosed with a mental illness, TBN has rejected their calls for the money to be repaid.  If I did the math right, the man donated almost $30k to TBN.  There’s a long story here. (Maybe TBN could ‘plant a seed’ in this man’s life to help with his mental illness.)

If You’re Going to Interview a Book Author on Video, Be Sure You Buy the Book
I thought this was kind of funny.  I’ve really been watching some of the new video technology that’s happening on the web.  One interesting one is Ustream.tv that allows you to webcast live for free.  Well, as one of their tests last week, they hosted a live interview with Guy Kawasaki, the famous innovation guy.  They were going to discuss innovation and Guy’s newest book.  All went well, until about 30 seconds into the interview, Guy notices that the interviewer actually borrowed his copy of the book from the library.  Here’s the link.  How embarrassing.  (By the way, this 30 minute interview has some good stuff in it).

    Building Soon?  How’s Your Vision?
Interesting article:  One of the surest ways to test your church’s mission and vision is to begin a building campaign. In some congregations, merely starting the discussion is enough to uncover the cracks and fault lines in what was thought to be shared vision. Every church I’ve encountered – professionally and personally – has been through a season marked by the loss of shared vision regarding their future and God’s calling for them. And nothing highlights this – or acts as a better catalyst – than a building campaign.  Read more here...

10 Clues to the Future of Vibrant United Methodist Ministry
I’m not a UM, but this link looked interesting ‘if you’re into that kind of thing’.  Seriously… it looks really good. I think we’re entering into a ‘post-denomination’ era, and it’s good that some folks are thinking seriously about the future, and envisioning a vibrant ministry on the horizon.

    I Stand Corrected (from Yesterday)
Unlike some other bloggers who delete posts when they get it wrong, I’ll fess up to my mistakes here.  Yesterday, I said that there was a meeting between Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson, and Jonathan Falwell to discuss world peace.  Actually, it was Pat’s son Gordon Robertson.  My bad.  Please accept my apologies.  (Maybe world peace wasn’t an important enough topic for Pat… so he just sent his son?) No slight intended, Gordon.

Six to Nine Months Wait to be Married at Willow Creek
According to this article. My question.  Since Willow doesn’t preach about sin and is so ‘feel good’ in their philosophy, won’t all the babies already be born in couples have to wait 6-9 months to be married?

OK… enough of my cutting sarcasm (not one of my better traits).  You all have a great day!

PS—Feel free to email or pass this post on to a friend you think might be interested in it!  Thanks!

The interviewer in the Guy Kawasaki video should check out the book “Emotional Intelligence”
