    Ministry in the Fire...
“People are way more open to God when they have no control over what’s going to happen to their own safety and their own haven. When that’s threatened, people start really looking. I feel like in the next week, we’re going to see a lot of things happening in churches.” —Natalia Kohn, an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship team leader in San Diego, on the ministry opportunities that may arise following the devastating fires throughout Southern California that have displaced an estimated 500,000 people.  From the Ministry Report...

    Strength in Small Groups...
Rick Warren on CNN’s Larry King Live:  “Our church is built on what we call small groups. We have about 3,500 small groups that go from Malibu all the way down to Carlsbad. They’re in every city in Southern California. And, so, our members have been taking in people all week. So, instead of them having to go to evacuation centers, they’re actually staying in homes of our members.  And then we have had many, many of what we call our volunteer chaplains going out to all the different evacuation centers, counseling, caring, comforting, coaching, praying for people. And then we have been serving as a clearinghouse for donations, as we have been getting food and getting money out to those who—who literally lost everything this week.” SOURCE

The Re-Grouping and Re-Focus at Focus on the Family
James Dobson has become synonymous with the empire that is Focus on the Family. Tourists clamor for photos of the group’s founder when he’s not taping a radio show, talking about the presidential race on a TV news show or writing another child-rearing book.  Some staff confess to asking “What Would Dr. Dobson Do?” when faced with a dilemma.  But out of public view, a new generation of executives is laying the groundwork for sustaining the conservative Christian group as a cultural and political force once the 71-year-old Dobson has left the scene. And most of their efforts are concentrated not in the political realm, but in finding new ways to deliver marriage and parenting advice to a younger generation of families, many of whom distrust institutions or dislike evangelical engagement in politics.  More here...

Christian Rapper says “Pull Your Pants Up!”
Dallas gospel rapper Dooney Da’Priest is doing his part to help stop the saggy-pants fad among urban youths.  Da’Priest has written a rap as part of the Pull Your Pants Up campaign, which is being pitched in billboards and posters that went up around Dallas this week.  The rap, also titled Pull Your Pants Up, says: Be a real man, stand up, is that your underwear man, pull your pants up.  “I’m educating them on what it means” to wear saggy pants, Da’Priest said. “If it’s explained to them the right way, they’ll pull their pants up on their own.” SOURCE

Westboro Baptist Sued for Cheering Soldiers Death...
Before the March 2006 funeral for Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, a marine who was killed in Iraq, protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, a tiny fundamentalist splinter group, picketed the service with signs that read “God Hates You” and “Thank God for Dead Soldiers.” Albert Snyder, Corporal Snyder’s father, sued the church in United States District Court here, claiming invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.  The Westboro protesters, whose church is in Topeka, Kan., frequently picket the funerals of military officials and soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan because church leaders assert that God is killing soldiers to punish America for condoning homosexuality. The lawsuit, which is being tried in Baltimore, is believed to be the first against the church by the family of a fallen serviceman.  Mr. Snyder, who said Westboro members turned his son’s funeral in Westminster, Md., into a “media circus,” is seeking unspecified damages in the jury trial, which is expected to end next week. In opening statements, his lawyer said church members had shown no regret for the protest, which he said had left Mr. Snyder with depression and health complications from diabetes.  SOURCE
