Half of American Idol’s Top Ten are Worship Leaders or Have Church Ties

    Couple questions:

    1.  Do you watch American Idol?

    2.  Do you secretly (or not so secretly) root for the Christians to win?  Why or why not?  Is this right or wrong?

    Just wondering…

    Todd

According to MTV.com: "more than half of this year's crop of finalists — including Danny Gokey, Michael Sarver, Kris Allen, Scott MacIntyre, Matt Giraud and Lil Rounds — either have a strong affiliation with the church or are worship leaders in their communities.

"I think that Christians probably watch the show all the time but maybe don't admit it. But this gives them someone to root for in this cast who is not just talented but also follows their faith, and people want to get behind contestants who align with their views," said Joanne Brokaw, who writes the Gospel Soundcheck" column for the spirituality Web site BeliefNet.com. "Christian music has always had this cheesy label attached to it, and this shows that a Christian singer can have artistic integrity and they are people who can really sing."

This is the first season i haven’t missed an episode.  I have even prayed for a couple of these guys that I knew were worship leaders.

I believe God wants us to be people of influence! I think it would be awesome for a follower of Christ to Win American Idol.

Lord knows America could use some good role models!

Personally, I cringe when I see Christians on TV. It stresses me out—just waiting for them to misrepresent Jesus, or to embarrass the lot of us.

It’s kinda like the athletes who say at the end of a game, “Thank God for victory!”  Uh, wha? Was God not listening to the prayers of the OTHER team? (Snark snark snark?)

I don’t root for the churchy folks unless they have the pipes to back it up.

Another thing. Scott the Blind Guy just SOUNDS like a church singer, yes? Like Maranatha circa…whadya say…1991? We could tell from the get-go that he was churched. I still haven’t decided if that’s good or bad.

And now I’ll go find my pitchfork and go watch Letterman. I hear Jim Gaffigan is on. http://www.mondaymorninginsight.com/images/smileys/smile.gif

Stretch mark mama, you full on rock.  I’d rather watch Gaffigan than Scott ANY DAY!

I do watch Idol (admit I didn’t in the earlier seasons - but do now)  I am rooting for Danny Gokey - but partially because I really enjoy his voice.  Maybe the Worship Leader angle is in there too.  But I also really like the sounds of Adam and Allison (to round out my top three) who I don’t believe have any church connection.  Bottom line - I need to be able to like their voice to cheer for them.

I think the greater issue for our discussion is the pros and cons of Christians auditioning for AI and, if so, HOW they should or should not participate.

I appreciate John Morris for addressing this from at least one perspective.

My wife and I watch AI regularly and have for years.  She is adamantly opposed to Christians on the show, because she sees them as ‘selling out’ and through participation validating many of the things (on the show and in the industry) that are not honoring of Christ.

I, personally, have mixed feelings.  On the one hand, I see my wife’s (& John Morris’) points and believe there is a lot of validity to them.  On the other hand, I can see it as a wonderful opportunity to promote Christ.  The question I’m not sure I can answer, is if doing this is truly possible within the restrictions of the show and its producers.  How much say do the contestants really have regarding song choice?  How much (positive or negative influence for Christ) is left on the editing room floor?

One thing I do know, is that counting this season and last I have yet to see a Christian contestant who I felt truly honored Christ on the show or set themselves apart as distinctly different because of Christ.
