The Vatican’s Ten Commandments for Cars
Thou shall not drive under the influence of alcohol. Thou shall respect speed limits. Thou shall not consider a car an object of personal glorification or use it as a place of sin.  The Vatican took a break from strictly theological matters Tuesday to issue its own rules of the road, a compendium of do’s and don’ts on the moral aspects of driving and motoring. A 36-page document called “Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road” contains 10 Commandments covering everything from road rage, respecting pedestrians, keeping a car in good shape and avoiding rude gestures while behind the wheel… Asked at a news conference when a car became an occasion of sin, Cardinal Renato Martino said “when a car is used as a place for sin.” Hmmmm… more here.

Street Pastors on Patrol in the UK
Volunteers from local churches who have trained as Street Pastors will be ‘hitting’ the streets of Portsmouth on June 22.  They will help those who have drunk too much or got into fights by getting them to taxis or the Nightbus, walking local people home, administering basic first aid or simply chatting.  Twenty-nine people ranging in age from 18 to 70 have gone through the training course with topics ranging from personal safety, sex, relationships and child protection awareness to first aid and listening and mediation skills. Much of the training has been provided free of charge by many different agencies, demonstrating the widespread support for the scheme across the city.  They will work in teams of four, each wearing jackets and baseball caps emblazoned with the words ‘Street Pastor’ and will complement existing patrols of police officers and community wardens.  Street Pastors is a national initiative that started in Brixton in 2003 as a response to rising levels of late-night street crime. It now has schemes in 16 London boroughs, as well as Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and other cities across the UK. In Peckham street crime is down by 74 per cent on Street Pastor nights.  HT:  EpiscopalCafe

Externally Focused Small Groups Concept Paper FREE DOWNLOAD!
Leadership Network is constantly putting out some great free resources that I think are one of the best kept secrets around.  Last week, a new “Externally Focused Concept paper was released on Small Groups.  How do churches effectively increase the level of community service without detracting from the internal strength of the church or competing with other programs? Re-engineering small groups to serve as well as study together is one of the more popular answers to this dilemma of staying internally strong while being externally focused.  You can download this concept paper here for free. You’ll have to register (also free) one time; but after your first time, you’ll automatically have instant access to all kinds of free concept papers, downloadable resources, PODcasts, and more!
