    Bill Gates on Church Attendance

    Bookmark and Share

Seems like a common criticism.  Kind of goes along with the 'church is boring'; 'I don't get anything out of church' mindset that many non-Christians feel about the church.

So what is the church and it's believers to do to reach people who think like Bill Gates?

Many churches have done a great job at making church relevant, interesting, and applicable to conditions that unsaved (yes, sinners) are going through; only to be criticized by other Christians for guess what... being relevant and watering down the message.

Many churches have concentrated on meeting felt needs:  more topical messages; trying to relate to real-life issues that people are having in today's society.  Find a need and fill it; only to be criticized by other Christians for being humanistic, centering on man's needs and not Christ.

FOR YOUR INPUT:  So my question... how would you approach Bill Gates?  If you're church is not being relevant or meeting felt-needs of unbelievers, how would you get past his criticism that your church is not worth his time?  How do you convince someone who has everything (earthly speaking) that he needs Christ?

In an interview with TIME magazine, Bill Gates is quoted as saying:  "Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning." Of course, by "Sunday Morning" he’s talking about a church service.  To Bill, church and religion are not worth one hour of his time.  It’s just good time management.

We can’t throw someone a life jacket when they don’t know their drowning. It doens’t register with people like Bill Gates and most Americans that we need God. To them God is just our crutch. To us he really is like our crutch or in reality a wheelchair because we can do nothing without him.

To reach people like Bill Gates we need to probe where the Spirit is convicting him. We need to be honest and speak the truth in love. Using the 10 Commandments we can see if and where he is being convicted. When he realizes that his standard doesn’t really matter then hopefully he will have a softened heart prepared by the Lord.

I think this question is great. From the discussion I’ve read so far, I’m seeing the same sorts of responses that I’ve gotten when I asked the question in a different way:

“What do you do for a person who is perfectly content with the life they have without Jesus? Sure, they have hard times from now and again, but in their mind, ‘that’s life.’ How do I convince someone they need Jesus in their life when they’re already convinced that they have everything they need and don’t need anything else?”

Nobody knows what to say, some people just don’t understand the question (as it appears with “BeHim”). This is all really tough!

Bill Gates should know that he is not the first rich man and will not be the last. During the days of Jesus on earth, He gave a parable of a rich man that had no place for God and how his life ended(Lk.12:16-21). Everyone that is rich on earth and is not rich towards God will be miserable at the end of life.

Bill Gates should know that it is not first about going to Church, but about having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ by being born again. It takes being born again to find Church attendance interseting. The taste of the pudding is in the eating, so also the taste of christianity is in belonging to Christ. The message to Bill Gates is: O taste and see that the Lord is good. Give your life to Chris and He will make all the difference in you life.
