    Secular Music… in Church!?

    Bookmark and Share

Let me ask everyone, what is secular music? Or what is Christian music? Hummmm.... you know, it does not exist. There is no such thing as Christian or secular music, there is only Christian or secular lyrics. Now, I believe that you must use great diserment, and common sense (common sense is not common!). I would not endorse playing Love Shack or something like that, but come on. What is wrong with some great "secular" music in church. Nothing in my opinion.

If your church is trying to be relevant or trying to reach a hell bound community or culture then you need to create an environment that will attract and capture their attention. Weaving great worship music and great known secular music is a wonderful way to create a great worship experience. I don't endorse playing secular music or any type of music just to do it; be intentional and on purpose with your music/worship set. I also encourage everyone to be creative and adjust your style for change sake. This weekend we are doing a total acoustic set, and we are playing 2 classic worship songs, and 2 great secular songs. All the songs create a mood and guide the audience in a direction that we are trying to take them.

Did you catch that....don't miss it, it is my final point. Take people where they need to go, not necessarily where they want to go! That has been a huge part of my learnings in the past month or so. Don't quote me, that statement is way to good to be mine.

Do you agree?  Do you use 'secular' songs at your church?  Why or why not?

Gotta love Terry Storch!  He’s posted a real winner today on a very controversial topic… why would anyone use a ‘secular’ song in a ‘church’ setting.  (No one knows how to post a controversial post like Terry and myself!)    Here’s part of what Terry wrote…

      Peter,

“Seeker friendly nonsense” is correct.  The church focuses more on reching the world while in church than on worshipping the Lord.  Nowhere in the Bible do you find attempts by Christians to reach the world while gathered together for service.  Everytime, the church is told to go out into the world and reach them outside, win them to Christ, and then bring them in as a new believer.

I grew up in church singing the great old gospel hymns and I still love to sing them.  I cannot stand to hear the noise that some of our so called churches are playing now.  You say that there is no difference between secular and Christian music.  I say then that you don’t know how the Holy Spirit feels.  If it’s meant to be in God’s House, then a child of God can feel the presence of the Holy Ghost in the music.  This is the true test of preaching also.  Most preachers today just want to make people happy.  That is wrong and any true Christian knows that it is.  The Bible tells us to come out from the world and be a seperated people, not the other way around.  If you can’t tell the difference from the worldly and the Holy then you need to ask God to help you understand.  May God help us in this apostate church age.

I have to confess: I really like secular music. I crank up tunes with a fast beat when driving my car or carrying my IPod when I run. I keep musically current and the preset stations on my car stereo prove it (of course I have local Christian Radio on the first station preset in case one of our church deacons climb in my car with me and judge me).

What’s cool about secular music these days is that some super talented Christian artists have infiltrated and even taken over the most coveted positions on Billboard’s charts and secular radio stations’ song rotations. All the record companies care about is that our guys and gals are talented and sell records.

If the church is providing an environment that gives young people a place to be creative, original, excellent, and Christ-centered; if the music AND lyrics are the overflow of what God is doing in their lives, why would we showcase something less in our public gatherings? The people we are trying to reach recognize excellence and creativity. Why give them what they already get on MTV, VH1, or their classic rock radio station? Forgive me for stretching the limits of one of Jesus’s best metaphors, but isn’t giving old tunes new and cleaned up lyrics sort of like putting new wine into old wine skins? (I’m not very good at theology, so forgive me if using this word picture borrowed from Jesus doesn’t fit. It’s just the way I argue.) Why not bundle Christ-centered lyrics with fresh music created by people passionate about pointing the world to a Savior? The church definitely has the talent.

I, personally, do not see this as controversial, though I know there are people who think so.  We do this in our church now and then, especially when a “secular” song particularly fits the point the pastor is making in his teaching that week.  For instance, when the teaching series was focusing on the importance of developing real relationships and community, we used “We are Family” and the Theme from Cheers.  People loved it.  Of course, we will occasionally change a few words of a song—not to make it “churchy” but only to remove anything that might be inappropriate.  I say, give the Gospel message and Biblical teaching in whatever form will speak to the people you are serving.
