Outreach Magazine recently published their list of the 100 fastest growing churches in America. You can see the full list here; but here are the top ten...

1.  Lakewood Church (Houston, TX) +12,000
2.  Park Cities Presbyterian (Dallas, TX) +5,108
3.  New Birth Missionary Baptist (Lithonia, GA) +3,500
4.  Salem Baptist (Chicago, IL) +3,366
5.  Without Walls International Church (Tampa, FL) +3,330
6.  Asbury United Methodist (Tulsa, OK) +3,240
7.  St. Luke Community UMC (Dallas, TX) +3,037
8.  Willow Creek Community (Chicago, IL) +2,900
9.  Grove City Church of the Nazarene (Grove City, OH) +2,861
10.  Community Bible Church (San Antonio, TX) +2,858

Any thoughts?  (Other than we don’t judge a church by it’s attendance; and/or how bad these types of lists are?)

My wife and I have visited Calvary Church in St. Peters, MO, which is #56 on this list.  I was actually very impressed with the service.  Yes, it had excellent “production value” and all that cool trimmings.  But the teaching was very biblical.  People there seemed genuinely excited to be there and anxious to serve.  We’ve been contacted about visiting small groups, etc.  And our children are playing Upward Basketball through there.  It’s a good place.  We’re not ready to join right now because we are still visiting other churches in the area.  It’s big, no doubt, which is a little intimidating.  But I’ve not encountered any reasons to be skeptical about what they do or how they do it.

I’m concerned about the way we toss around the superlative words and phrases like “fastest growing” and “most successful”, etc.  I wonder if someone can define those phrases and terms with out using a list of numbers or statistics… Should we even be concerned about which churches are the fastest growing, most successful, etc?  It appears to me that if we spent more time tending to our own flocks than being concerned about which church is “growing” faster than anybody else’s church we might see real growth among our “the church” the body of believers who are out in the trenches everyday living out who God has called them to be in His great big awesome world.
“And that’s all I have to say about that.”

very interesting blog… i think we’ve all heard about how awful “transfer growth” is and how it is really the equivalent to sheep stealing, but it seems to me that (more often than not) this kind of growth can be very positive…

i say this because if someone is engaged, and ministering, and serving in their present church, they will not be inclined to leave, merely to find greener pastures… i know of a number of people who have moved from stagnant, faltering, near-death churches into churches that are growing, alive, and vibrant - because they have found a new church (which may well be one of those fast-growing mega-churches) where they meet God regularly, and where they find opportunities to serve Him…
