2006 Most Influential Christians in America

Jakes The Church Report is pleased to announce this year’s list of The 50 Most Influential Christians in America. According to The Church Report, "Thanks to the readers of the magazine as well as the online readers for contributing over 150,000 nominations. Each of the people on this list is most deserving of this recognition. As with all types of lists, there are those who are not on the list – not because they weren’t deserving – but simply because we did not have enough space to publish a list of the 100 most influential. The staff of The Church Report did not choose this list; rather, we feel that the nominations from Christians across America and around the world are much more meaningful."

TD Jakes was #1 on the list this year, followed by Joel Osteen, Billy Graham, Rick Warren and Bill Hybels.

You can check out all 100 on the list here.

Somehow, I think my personal list would be much different... probably yours would be as well.  Just for fun, give us your top five or top ten influential Christians in the country.  Doesn't mean you like them or agree with them, but the people you think have the most influence on our culture and the church (I guess those really could be two totally different lists!)

Have fun!

Todd

Romans 14:1 Accept anyone who is weak in faith, but don’t argue about doubtful issues. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, but one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 One who eats must not look down on one who does not eat; and one who does not eat must not criticize one who does, because God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to criticize another’s servant? Before his own Lord he stands or falls. And stand he will! For the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person considers one day to be above another day. Someone else considers every day to be the same. Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 Whoever observes the day, observes it to the Lord. Whoever eats, eats to the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; and whoever does not eat, it is to the Lord that he does not eat, yet he thanks God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and came to life for this: that He might rule over both the dead and the living. 10 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God. 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. 13 Therefore, let us no longer criticize one another, but instead decide not to put a stumbling block or pitfall in your brother’s way. 14 (I know and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself. Still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to that one it is unclean.) 15 For if your brother is hurt by what you eat, you are no longer walking according to love. By what you eat, do not destroy that one for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore, do not let your good be slandered, 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever serves the Messiah in this way is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another. 20 Do not tear down God’s work because of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to cause stumbling by what he eats. 21 It is a noble thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother stumble. 22 Do you have faith? Keep it to yourself before God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever doubts stands condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith, and everything that is not from faith is sin.

I have very much enjoyed this season I have spent reading and sharing with some truly passionate bond servants of Jesus on this blog site and I want to extend my thanks to Todd for creating it.

Even so, I find that of late my spirit has become very grieved by the ugly, foolish, immature and carnal religious pride being expressed by so many here who dare to blaspheme the Holy Spirit working in and through the lives of Christian men and women with whom I have personal relationship and in whom I have witnessed the presence, love, humility and power of God only found in authentic disciples of Jesus.

In order to avoid succombing to the pull of the enemy I sense trying to draw as many who read this site as possible into the accuser of the brethren spirit, I must at this time sorrowfully end my participation. I know for some of you that will bring great happiness, for others perhaps laughs and ridicule, and for some you could not care less, but to the few of you with whom I have genuinely connected in the Spirit of the Lord, I say good bye and thank you for manifesting the evidence of love that is the only thing that can or ever will reveal Jesus to the world.

Be blessed and have fun y’all,

In Him, By Him, For Him,

    Jim Eaton

Jim, we’ve had our disagreements and even agreed on some but I’m sorry to read that you are leaving.  I understand though… I had to step away for awhile too.  I hope you come back and at least read some times.  Keep in touch.

Jim, I am sad to see you go too.  Your input on this blog has been wise and helpful to me. Your reason for leaving the blog is also wise.  But still, I will miss your posts.

“T.D. Jakes concern is mostly with helping the people of God live a victorious life. “

TD Jakes is preaching another gospel.  Jesus said, that unless you deny yourself and pick up your cross and follow him, you are not a follower of his (Luke 9:23 and many other places).  He also said to look at the fruit.  These people preach wealth & prosperity.  They live in wealth.  They chase wealth, in the name of Christ. Christ taught the opposite… storing treasure in heaven rather than earth.  The world is dying without Christ, and those in America supporting false teachers like TD Jakes are doing great damage… to the worldwide church, because this prosperity message is being shipped worldwide by TBN TV.  How sad that it seems most pastors don’t even get see it.

Please, if you want to see the truth, focus on Luke 9:23 and read the commentaries on it.  I’ve seen so many commentaries on it… why can’t church pastors pick up on it???  Get the free bible research software (e-sword at http://www.e-sword.net/) for getting many bible translations and commentaries on your PC, for free.

Also, if you want to see a great role-model for how to live Luke 9:23, go to gfa.org (Gospel for Asia) and get their free book.  It will open your eyes (to the world), guarenteed.

    Just my opinion.

    Bernie,

I think you’re assessment of Jakes is pretty much on-target. I love what the Life Application Commentary says about that verse, btw. “Materialism and the pursuit of power, independence, and security are probably the biggest obstacles to spiritual development.”

I have to stop agreeing with you, man. I’m wrecking my reputation… and probably yours, too…

    (just kidding)

    ;-D

No Peter you’re reputation will stay in tact as long as you don’t agree with me wink

    BeHim,

LOL! But if I agree with you on THAT, what do I do NOW?

    tongue wink

btw, I agree with you sometimes… often in fact!

Thank you for comments regarding the top 50 list. Being in the media, it is always interesting how these lists stir the pot, even when I dont pick them myself!

As for Dr. Phil, step back and take breath, and read the following: http://www.thechurchreport.com/content/view/266/32/ I can personally state that I have spent time with the man and he is a gopod Christian.

I enjoy the blogs, I never knew how many “authorities” the world would have on who was a Christian and who was not.

    Jason,

WOW! What a SHOCK! I think I might take some time and read one of his books, at least to be better informed. Although it shouldn’t be a surprise, although he doesn’t talk explicitly about the Faith, much of what I’ve heard him say is VERY compatible with a Christian Worldview. I suspect that he’s got issues I’d disagree with strongly, but I’m willing to give him a chance. THANKS for that link. We needed it!

    Hi Jason-

If you’re responsible for identifying TD Jakes as an influential Christian, rather than a destroyer of the faith, then I don’t take much stock in your opinion, when you say:
“ I can personally state that I have spent time with the man and he is a good Christian.” (Regardless of who you are referringto.)

TD Jakes’ prosperity message is the opposite of what Jesus taught.  In Christianity, we need another reformation, to clean house of the prosperity teachers, who are part and parcel of TBN, which encourages them all.

You cannot serve both God and money.  Those are the words of our Lord.  God wants you to be rich.  That is the message of TD Jakes.  TD Jakes is ruled by the deceitfulness of wealth… read the parable of the sower to find out what happened to that plant.  Shame on any minister that holds him up as a noble standard!
