A Few Changes Here at MMI.  You Like?

I've made a couple changes here at the MMI website over the last few days, and just wanted to let you know about them and get your feedback. I'm one that likes change... but I realize not all website users do. Here are the changes and the reasons behind them...

1.  I’ve added a new featured “Blog of the Week” on the main MMI home page.  This week’s featured blog is PerryNoble.com.  I’ll try and change these weekly with a new blog each week that is ministry related.  You’ll find the most recent post highlighted at all times.

2.  Underneath that, I’ve added a ‘feed’ of sorts that has ten other recent links from other websites that you may (or may not) find interesting.  Essentially, this is a feed of other blogs that I really like (people like Tony Morgan, Mark Waltz, Kem Meyer, Mark Batterson; and other blogs like ChurchVideoIdeas, ChurchRelevance, ChurchMarketingSucks, and others.  What you’ll find in this section is ten of the most recent posts placed by all these blogs collectively.  That means they should update quite a bit throughout the day.  Each time you come, there should be something new for you to check out.

Here’s the underlying reason I’ve added these feeds:  Every day, I go through literally hundreds of articles, links, posts, and suggest resources to post on MMI.  I do much of this through Bloglines, Google Alerts, Reader feedback, Site Referrals, etc.  (I don’t want to give away all my secrets).  Actually, there is a lot of good stuff that just doesn’t make the cut all the time (I can’t post everything!).  So, for me, this was one way to include some other great content that constantly updates without adding to my workload.

The question is… do you like the new links?  Will you look at them?  and will you click them?  What’s your first impression?

3.  Another area I’m hoping to start beefing up is our category pages.  Our MMI archive is approaching about 1500 resources and everything is categorized and placed on a category page.  I haven’t really pushed this flexibility; and, to be honest, haven’t developed it near as much as I’d like.  You can check out any of the category pages now… just pick an area that is your passion and click on that category on the right.  You’ll find the last posts specifically on that topic; along with some featured resources (books, etc.) and a forum, where you can add your own discussion topics.  The key to filling up these category pages is to recruit some help adding content.  Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice some new names adding content in specific areas.  For example, Greg Atkinson today introduces a new column titled “Church Video Ideas” that will help us beef up our technology section.  As MMI takes on the voice of others (other than me), I’m really interested in your feedback.

4.  Lastly, I’ve added a bloglines button in the upper right of each page.  I’m planning on doing a tutorial on bloglines, but it’s a really neat way to get MMI updates and consolidate all your blogs you read in one place.  More on this later.

For now… what are your first impressions on the ‘featured blog’ and ‘other links’ section?  Something you’ll use, or not really?

You can be brutal… I’ll understand.  smile

Looking forward to the feedback.  Thanks for reading!  smile

Todd

As usual it is all great.

I like MMI because it is concise. My main connection to the blog is through a RSS feed so I can chose what I want to read. The link to other feeds is more time than I want to invest in data gathering. I guess I’m lazy and have been relying upon you to sort through the chaff and just forward what you think is news-worthy. I rely upon 6 or 7 sources like you (so that I am getting a breadth of perspective). I simply don’t have the time to scan all of the sources that all of these sources are reading.

Totally understand, Dave… many of MMI’s readers never actually visit the site, they just view it through Bloglines or another reader; so for you, it’ll really be no change at all.

You’ve got my curiosity up though… if you don’t mind sharing… who are the top 6 or 7 you watch.

Also to others out there… what other blogs/websites do you constantly monitor?

    Thanks!

Umm, what does all that mean?  Do I need to get a new computer now?  (actually the answer to that is “yes” if any of our trustees are reading this!)

Keep up the great work, Todd.

Very cool improvements, Todd! Thanks for Church Relevance’s inclusion.

The sites I check regularly are Jesus Creed, Seth Godin, Dave Fergeson, TSK, in adidtion my daily wanderings around mmi

  • A change I’d like to see is to list the newest comments first, like you did with the old MMI.  I frequently have to go to a page, page down to the section where I can fast forward, then click on that to get to the last page to post.

I agree with Bernie - I want to see the latest comments easily and quickly

oh P.S. I probably won’t check out the new stuff very often for the same reasons Dave mentioned.  In fact I only read articles you post if they’re relatively short - if I see them kind of lengthy I usually either do a quick skim or pass.  Sorry busy times!

Yes, I love the changes, too, Todd!  You’re doing a great job!  I do agree with Bernie and Ann about getting to the comments; it’s kind of a pain to get to the latest ones, particularly if it’s a post with a lot of comments.  Other than that, everything is great!

Definitely like Blog of the Week and the other feeds below it.

I think I’ll use the featured blog more than the other changes.  I’ve enjoyed exploring the blogs you link us to through MMI, but this is really the only one I participate in much.

At first I missed the longer list of most recent comments, but have found that by checking the box “notify me of follow-up comments” I can keep up with the comments in only those threads where I’ve chosen to participate in the discussion.  When someone posts on a discussion I’ve been part of I can link from my e-mail box right to the most recent comment in the discussion.  This is better for me really.

Ok - how do you do that Wendi because when I link from my email I still have to scroll through all the old posts to get to the most recent and comment box if I want to follow up.

  • I usually don’t read the emails-- too many of them.  I usually post by going to the main website article again.  Post on a couple of entries, and I could easily have 50 emails-- no way I’m going to read them!

Dude, I LOVE it! It’s all good! The idea of reading another successful church’s technology-buying guidelines is AWESOME!

Love it Todd! Keep it up!

Ann, seems you are right.  When we click on the e-mail link back to the thread we’ve jumped into, we still have to scroll down to the last comment.

And you are right Bernie, using that feature does fill up our e-mail boxes.  However, as I see it, if I’ve joined a discussion and want to add an additional comment, I have a responsibility to read the comments of other participants.  If I don’t, I might (and have) made the same comment someone else has already made or make other statements which show I haven’t been paying attention to the discussion.  For me, not reading all the comments while still participating would be like wandering in and out of a conversation at a dinner party, a little rude and inappropriate.  Time consuming?  Yes . . . and why I don’t participate in very many blogs.

Usually I read the responses from my e-mail, delete quickly those discussions I’ve opted out of and link back to MMI only if I have something to add.  Works for me and I am grateful for the feature.

I do read them, but not in email.
