Legendary Christian Rocker Larry Norman passed away over the weekend. A day before his death, Larry dictated one final letter. "I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God’s hand reaching down to pick me up," Larry said. "I have been under medical care for months. My wounds are getting bigger. I have trouble breathing. I am ready to fly home..."
Here’s a post from Larry’s brother, Charles:
Hello everybody.
Our friend and my wonderful brother Larry passed away at 2:45 Sunday morning. Kristin and I were with him, holding his hands and sitting in bed with him when his heart finally slowed to a stop. We spent this past week laughing, singing, and praying with him, and all the while he had us taking notes on new song ideas and instructions on how to continue his ministry and art …
Yesterday afternoon he knew he was going to go home to God very soon and he dictated the following message to you while his friend Allen Fleming typed these words into Larry’s computer:

My brother Charles is right, I wont be here much longer. I can’t do anything about it. My heart is too weak. I want to say goodbye to everyone. In the past you have generously supported me with prayer and finance and we will probably still need financial help.
My plan is to be buried in a simple pine box with some flowers inside. But still it will be costly because of funeral arrangement, transportation to the gravesite, entombment, coordination, legal papers etc. However money is not really what I need, I want to say I love you.
I’d like to push back the darkness with my bravest effort. There will be a funeral posted here on the website, in case some of you want to attend. We are not sure of the date when I will die. Goodbye, farewell, we will meet again.
Goodbye, farewell, we’ll meet again
Somewhere beyond the sky.
I pray that you will stay with God
Goodbye, my friends, goodbye.
Larry

Thank you to all of you who were so nice to my brother over the years. Kristin and I will post funeral information in the next day or two. Right now we’re not able to function very well, but the whole family is here … our mother Margaret, our sisters Nancy and Kristy, Mike Norman and his new wife Tiffany, and Silver.
We miss him beyond words. Thank you for everything.
Peace to you all in Christ,
Charles Norman

Rest in Peace, Larry.
Thank you for sharing your God given abilities with the Body of Christ.
See you when we get there.
I LOVE the “Why should the devil have all good music” song and lets hope that his music will continue to be used by God after his death like Keith Green.
Thanks for the link, Todd. I just put up a tribute to Larry on my site here:
My Tribute Song to Larry Norman
Ray
One of my favorites:
U.F.O.
“He’s an unidentified flying object
you will see Him in the air
He’s an unidentified flying object
you will drop your hands and stare
you will be afraid to tell your neighbors
they might think that it’s not true
but when they open up the morning papers
they will know they’ve seen Him too
He will come back like He promised
with the price already paid
He will gather up His followers
and take them all away.”
Goodbye, Larry. Rest in His peace.
Well they’re rockin’ in heaven like they’ve never rocked before! Larry you were one of the reasons I found God and stayed close to Him. Thank you for all you did. My children grew up knowing loads of your songs word for word. They’ll miss you as much as I will.
Love, prayers and condolences to his family!
Bless ya and luv ya,
Ken
Wow! I was just talking about him last week. I saw him in concert back in 1985 with a band called Vision. He had a big impact on Christian music. I’m sorry for his recent pain. He has no more.
U.F.O. is one of my favorite songs, too. I’ve always love the line:
And if there’s life on other planets
Then I’m sure that He must know
And He’s been there once already
And has died to save their souls
Rest in Peace, Larry. We will miss you.
Thanks, Larry, for the music and the inspiration. You are missed…
You will be missed… a lot. Thanks for the music and poetry....
Larry will be greatly missed on earth, but he is home in heaven
“And now we’ll live forever in another land,
Everything is happening like it first was planned.
Did you get your invitation to come play in the band
And let the Son begin to reign.”
I never knew Larry personally, but his life and music touched me a long, long time ago. At age 13 I was a DJ in a small, rural, mid-western town radio station. I grew up in a legalistic church that had a narrow view of the kind of music that God could use for His purposes. I remember the first time I played Larry’s song “I wish we all been ready”. I remember someone challenging me by saying, “How can God use anyone with hair that long?” Well, God did. My life was powerfully impacted for Christ because of Larry Norman and the music that Christ birthed inside Larry. I believe he is with Jesus today. I am ready to go and wish others would be ready too.
God used Larry’s music paved the way for so much of what we have now. Precious in the eyes of God is the sleep of his saints… Our prayers are with the family.
Sorry to see he’s gone. I came to Christ in the early 80’s and by then Larry wasn’t recording so much (at least from what I can tell), but there is no questioning his awesome influence on Christian music.
Thankful to God for him!

AS a teen and young adult Larry’s music and words lifted burdens and provided the joy that I thought Christians could not possess. His humor has indirectly effected my lifestyle and preaching style as well. I’m delighted for his gain and saddened by the family’s loss.
I’ve been a follower of Jesus since 1960 and Larry Norman had a huge influence on my early Christian life. I thank the Lord for him having the courage to express his love for Jesus through the gifts the Lord gave to him. Some of his first songs had great meaning and power in my life. He is with his Jesus and they are rejoicing in the music of heaven which is indescribable and beyond comprehension. Praise the Lord!

Wow, I am shocked. Didn’t know he was ill. Larry Norman was the first Christian singer I listened to and he paved the way for so many. I started listening to him in the 1970’s, if that tells you how old I am! He quickly became one of my husbands’ favorite artists as well. We really loved him and will continue to listen to his music. Our sons’ name is Norman
Thank you sooooo much for bringing us to a place where we can be peace. You have always been an inspiration to many of us Christians who valued the words of Bob Dylan and others. Your song “the carpenter” is by far the song that made me Jesus in a whole new light. Now your there with HIM.
Praise God.

Because of Larry Norman I learned that you could have long hair, like loud screaming guitars and still love Jesus. I learned that being a Christian didn’t mean commiting intellectual suicide. I learned that sometimes the Godly thing to do was to challenge an ungodly government and that sometimes it’s even Godly to challenge the accepted norms of the church. Back in the 1980’s I heard Larry Norman give a lecture at the Cornerstone Festival outside of Chicago. When an individual asked him, “What’s it like being the grand daddy of Christian rock,” Larry Norman’s response was, “I don’t know, I think bible study is more important.” The guy may have been eccentric, controversial, etc, but when it all comes down to it for me he was a prophetic voice to a generation of disenfranchised young people. And now he finally gets to meet face to face the One whom he spent so many years telling us about...and frankly, I think that’s really cool.
Larry Norman, ad the Second Chapter of Acts, These were the first Christian musicians that I was ever exposed to outside of Church Hymns, and these were the first guy’s who made me believe and realize that Christianity and being a Christian IS Cool
Yeah, Larry and others like him in that generation gave me the excitement and imputus to share my faith at 13. 3 of those junior high friends are now believers and his music had a direct impact.
My first thought was that he died with not just dignity, which we hear a lot about, but with hope.
And my second was to sit with a silly grin on my face as I listened. He was a lot of fun!
Thanks for sharing that. And happy for Larry, now that he’s home.
larry,
to this day some 40 years after first hearing you for the first time it is hard to think of not remembering you on a daily basis. the greatest joy i have is re-listening to your music and testimony from which much of my motivation came and continues to come from. that is the impact you had on me, personally. lots of us have heroes in life, you were certainly mine....
