Australian Pastor Tells the Naked Truth, But Only For Edification, not Evangelism

Orginally published on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 7:54 AM

A naturist church minister has called on like-minded Christians to join him in celebrating religion in the nude. Pastor Robert Wright, 51, is to hold weekly fellowship meetings at a nudist resort near Brisbane. Wright, who has been a naturist for more than 16 years, said: "I am not trying to get Christians to become nudists, I am catering for Christians who are nudists."

Wright, who was ordained three years ago, is also planning to open a naked music festival at nearby Cabarita and lead services there.

Even security guards will be naked at the event, which has been dubbed Raw Cabarita and which promises to be “an awesome three-day party where clothes aren’t necessary”.

But Wright added: “Nude is not rude, and the festival will not be like a ‘69 Woodstock-type thing.

“There are more Christians in it than people realize. We are not into sex orgies, we are very well-adjusted people.”

(I’d like to invite Pastor Wright to conduct an outdoor service here in Ohio this week, where the windchill is -5 degrees.  I bet that’d make him put some clothes on.)

I once heard someone say, “A person’s morality will often dictate their theology.” In other words, we will pretty much do what they want to do and look for reasons why it’s OK with God.  Mr. Write is telling us that “nude is not rude” and I would agree, as long as it is within the guidelines set forth in scripture…namely marriage.  We are also suppose to be led to believe that a room full of naked people cease to be human and simply keep their thoughts and mind totally on the sermon of a naked pastor. OH PLEASE!

Honestly, I hope that this post won’t give this so-called pastor his 15 minutes of fame.  In fact, he isn’t worthy of 30 seconds of fame.  The world looks at guys like this and find yet another reason why Christians have a screw loose and have yet another reason to close their ears to the gospel or go to church.

Well, the weather here in Australia is quite a bit warmer than Ohio…

I should point out that the source article is 3 years old, and the event in question happened some time ago. I suspect that Mr Wright did not get as many Christian naturists as he was hoping for at his fellowship meetings.

The item does raise an interesting question, though: How should you approach cross-cultural mission amongst people whose behaviour you find morally unacceptable?

Agree with all the comments, how did this fruitcake get on hear?

Im also embarrassed that he is an auusie!! Trust me not all aussies are like him, in fact none are..

“Mr. Write is telling us that “nude is not rude” and I would agree, as long as it is within the guidelines set forth in scripture…namely marriage. “

Could have not said it better myself!

John G. asked, “How should you approach cross-cultural mission amongst people whose behaviour you find morally unacceptable?” Isn’t this what missions has done for 2000+ years?  Missionaries have been most effective when they have found culturally-relevant means by which to communicate the truths of God’s word.  The most potent example that comes to mind is recorded in the book Peace Child, by Don Richardson, who confronted and ultimately won over a violent, cannibalistic society; when he understood their concept of a “peace child”, he was able to communicate that Jesus was God’s peace child.

    Randy,

I think what you’re saying about cross cultural ministry and what Mr. Write is doing is “apples and oranges.” I’m sure the cultural Mr. Lives in involves wearing clothes.  Those that decide not to wear them or rebelling of the cultural.

No one has been able to answer for me yet how a bunch of naked people can get together and not have thoughts that are not acceptable to God.

WOW....my post was filled with typos.  Sorry it’s early here. I’m currently in NY and its a cold icy morning and my body clock is still on West Coast time.

I wanted to add, that in my early training I was going to be a tribal missionary with New Tribes Mission.  One of the first things we were taught was, “you don’t have to be naked like the tribal people to be part of their cultural.  Frankly, Mr. Write knows better.

From Andy McAdams:  “We are also suppose to be led to believe that a room full of naked people cease to be human and simply keep their thoughts and mind totally on the sermon of a naked pastor. OH PLEASE!”

I have been in exactly that situation, Andy: naked in a room full of other naked Christians, listening to a Gospel minister preach on Bible truth.  No, I did not “cease to be human,” but neither did I experience the least temptation to regard the others as less than human.  Let me make it perfectly clear: I was in no way tempted to make any sexual advance toward anyone in the room, nor did I receive any invitations to do so.  And there were women present, in the nude.

It is the extreme sexualization of nudity that is the aberration in our culture.  Once we understand that God (or evolution if you insist) made us naked, it becomes possible to be naked together with no more sexual activity or thoughts than happen at the average church service.

Uh, this story is over 3 years old now!  I am a personal friend of this pastor, and he is certainly not the fruitcake some people have painted him up to be.  He knows when it’s necessary to be dressed, and when it really isn’t.  If you think that public and social nudity is a bad or sinful thing, read your Bibles a lot closer: who was it who made Adam & Eve ashamed of their bodies? Definitely not God!  Read Isaiah 20:2 - God made him preach naked and barefoot for 3 years in the desert as a sign and wonder.  Jesus Christ (and Christians in the early church) was baptised fully nude in the river as was the custom in those days.  The human body is a good thing, and Leviticus condemns people who ‘call good things evil and evil things good’.  Having said that, nudity isn’t practical everywhere all the time and even pastor Bob knows this.  Being naked can be sexual if consenting parties wish for it to be and in appropriate environments, but it is not necessary to go from simple social nudity to full on sexual activity.  That is the experience that people like pastor Bob, myself and Jochanaan are trying to teach you all.

I, personally am appalled at what a minister of the gospel, namely this Mr. Wright has suggested to people in nudist camps. I feel that, if we were to be nude in a worship service, God would have given us the thought within our brains!

    Chuck,

Could you please care to specify exactly what inappropriate behaviour Mr. Wright has suggested to people in nudist camps that has appalled you?  I couldn’t find anything at all.

It is negative and arrogant thoughts from some Christians towards nudists which is why I refuse to have anything to do with organised Christianity and prefer to just study the Bible by myself for the most part.

Re-read your Bible: God did NOT put the thought into Adam & Eve’s heads that being naked was a bad or shameful thing.

if ye gonna sin just sin dont try to make it alright through the word of god, when adam and eve saw they were naked they hid themself, they made the clothes from fig leaves, but god made them some clothes out of animal skin so it would last longer, the leaves would wither and fall off, they were embarresed in front of god. cant you just see your people in the pew siting there naked this coming sunday morning, hey its not where your at except in private, someone asked dont you think people would have thoughts about the naked people, you could be wraped up in a granny dress, or a man in coveralls and people will have thoughts, but i bet some of them was lusting overtime, they would not admit it, but if they went that far to be naked hey hey hey.

Hello to you all. My name is Pastor Robert Wright (aka The Naked Pastor). I am the Pastor this post is talking about. I have been very blessed of our Lord to have had the opportunity to minister to many… and I do mean many Christian nudist men and women over the past 3 years. I will admit I do have a peculiar ministry and I minister in my corner of the Lords vine yard that he has given to me to work in. I’m an ordained Pentecostal minister with a missionary organization. My out reach work deals mostly with nudists and naturists here in Australia. I primarily minister to Christians who would never go to church because the main stream Christian churches would not have them in their congregations. But even they still need the teachings of Jesus Christ. They even need prayer. Baby dedication, water baptism, I also do hospital visits of their family members when no other minister of the Gospel will go to visit them in hospital. This is my congregation. These are the lost sheep the lord Jesus has give to me to minister to and to look after for him until his return. I will also say this. I do the ministry of our Lord, and as our lord said to St Peter, “what is it to you if I have him tarry until I come. Do not judge the servant of another”. If you have not been called into doing a ministry like this, then pray that you don’t.  Please do not attempt to try doing it in the flesh. You had better be carrying an anointing from the Lord Jesus to perform this type of ministry. If you wish to discuss this matter with me you can email me at Also if you are a Christian nudist and you are trying to find your way in this nudist life style, please feel free to contact me by email and we can talk the matter more privately.
Take care and God bless you.
    Remember:  nude is not rude

Pastor Robby, I applaud you for your desire to minister to the part of God’s flock that many consider are sinning by being free from body shame and lust. I had a bad experience with a pastor who said he couldn’t separate sex from nudity. I don’t remember at any time in my life considering the two to be one and the same as so many people do--especially Christians.

I’ve been a born again Christian (Baptist) for 45 years and have been to Bible college. I’ve served in every capacity in churches except that of pastor and presently serve as a soloist and song leader, which I’ve done nearly all of those 45 years.

Christ has freed me from lust and body shame, and I am able to be nude with other men, women, and even children without any thought of sex. That’s what social nudity does; it gives us the ability to know the difference between sexual nudity and non-sexual nudity, and it frees us from body shame and lustful thoughts. Believe it or not, there IS such a thing as non-sexual nudity.

I live full time in a nudist resort, and God supplied me with the finances to be live here. I am very active in my church, although I don’t tell them where I live since many professing to be Christians tend to be very judgmental and self-righteous.

The only reason God clothed Adam and Eve was because He was casting them out of a perfect environment into a harsh, cruel world with thorns and other hazards to the body. It wasn’t because He suddenly decided that their naked bodies were shameful. The skins were meant as PROTECTION and not to hide their nakedness.
