Bait and Switch Evangelism

Orginally published on Tuesday, May 08, 2007 at 7:05 AM

Evangelical Christians have distributed thousands of copies of an anti-Mormon DVD, packaged to look as if it comes from the Mormons. 500,000 discs have been mailed, with 200,000 more waiting. The disc's packaging says "He Is Risen!" on one side with the names of Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, on the other side...

FOR DISCUSSION:  What do you think of this ‘bait and switch’ approach?  Have you seen other examples of this type of evangelism?

Makes me a little uneasy. I like the idea of being culturally relevant to the people you are trying to reach, but using what appears to be deceptive tactics? I can’t see the Jesus doing that.

Distasteful, disrespectful. In no way aligns with St. Peter’s words: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

And what a great example of poor stewardship and a waste of the kingdom resources God has intrusted to us.

Does this fall undet the command to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves? Or does the Spirit inspires deviousness wink ?

As a former pastor and current account executive at a public relations and marketing firm, the idea of bait and switch marketing is abhorrent to me.  The church should absolutely use contemporary culture to reach out to and connect with people, but it should always be clear that it is doing just that, and not trick people into thinking they’re getting one thing when they’re getting another. A co-worker of mine told me when she was in youth group she was instructed them to go out to the mall and invite people to a “party”, which was actually a service. She said she’d never fall for bait and switch with a church because she knows how churches “use that trick.”

We must be above reproach and also be all things to all men. We cannot, CANNOT, reach out through deception. It is not our Father who is the father of lies…

Not only is it devious, but I doubt that it’s highly effective either.......

I’d like more details about the bait and switch before making a judgement.

As a person who is surrounded by Mormons, they tell us continually that they have the same Christianity.  So, if that’s so, why the upset if an evangelical uses the name of Joseph Smith on literature?

I don’ t like the idea of deceit for the purpose of evangelism.  But I do think that we need creative ways to communicate to LDS ‘rs.  Though I’m not sure what that is.

This sort of thing only harms the Kingdom and make us just as much deceivers as the LDS themselves.  I’m sure people would view the DVS’s without placing wrong information or deceptive covers.
