Can Rick Warren Change the World?  A FOX News Special

Orginally published on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 7:56 AM
by Todd Rhoades

Fox News is doing a special one hour program on Rick Warren this Sunday night. Here's the information from the press release...

Sun., August 20 at 8 p.m. ET
Hosted by David Asman

He’s an evangelical superstar. His runaway best seller has transformed lives. But can Rick Warren’s message change hell-on-Earth or has he bitten off more than he can chew?

This weekend, join host David Asman for a FOX News exclusive: “Purpose Driven Life: Can Rick Warren Change the World?”

We’ll show you how Pastor Warren became one of the most influential religious leaders in America and built one of the largest evangelical churches in the nation.

We’ll explore how he’s transformed the lives of his readers by telling them to follow the plan God had for them.

And, we’ll examine how Warren’s wife convinced him to acknowledge that God had an even bigger plan for him: Can “A Purpose Driven Life” turn a battered people into a purpose driven nation?

FOX News had exclusive access as Warren set out to slay what he calls the global giants of disease, poverty, illiteracy and spiritual emptiness in a place where he’d easily find them: Rwanda.

I know I’ll be watching!  How about you?

Some years ago in Calif. I went to church with a man who had a heart for Africa.  So he lived as inexpensively as he could, worked as much as he could, and saved enough money to send himself to Africa.  No missions board, no formal backing other than his local church.  He went to Africa (can’t say as I remember how he decided where in Africa to start) and began preaching the gospel.  When he ran out of money, he came home and started the process over again.  Before long, he realized he couldn’t just preach the gospel to those folks, and then get on a plane and leave them in abject poverty with a wave and a ‘I’ll be praying for you”.  So he set about finding ways to help the people in those villages support themselves in order to break the cycle of poverty.  The ‘businesses’ that he helped get started in those villages are extremely diverse and amazing.  Anyway, to me, that is the essence of the Gospel.  Telling people the Good News, showing them the love and compassion of Jesus, helping through whatever resources we have at our disposal.  By the way, his ministry now involves far more people, and they just moved into their fourth or fifth African country.

I think this is all that Rick is trying to do.  He has tremendous resources.  He’s trying to use them as responsibly as possible to communicate the love of Jesus in deed as well as word.

Jack - when a Mormon produces good deeds “fruit” - might it be their God image leaking out???

I certainly didn’t interpret you as saying that RW was Mormon, Jack.  grin
If a Mormon is doing good things for people (and they often do), then I would say (as I often do) good for them!!  Let that part of their ministry be blessed and flourish.  Lord knows we could use more people like that.

John 336 writes… [1) Rick Warren is a public figure with books written that need to be judge on their worthiness by comparison to what the Bible states.] Yes he is, and I think you’re right about the need to judge his books based on that comparison. Have you done this? By your own admission, no. Perhaps this disqualifies you from this debate in this fashion… I myself (and others here) have read PDC and PDL and I have a pretty good understanding of the Word (for myself having been a Christ-follower for a quarter-century and others as long or longer no doubt) and I have not found his work to be anti-Christian or heretical, as keeps being brought up.

Anyway, Todd’s gonna kick us all out ‘da room when he gets back. We have NOT played nice with each other. The whole RW/anti-RW debate has been done before, we’ve been warned off it, and my fervent prayer is that Todd will remove all these comments (including mine) if he feels the slightest inclination.

And Nora, I too think that RW can change the world… and you can, and I can. Heck, even BEHIM can! tongue wink (BeHim knows I love him...)

Yeah, me to Daniel.  My point being though is that, people can do a lot of good deeds, but still twist and not rightly divide the Word of God..

Peter I’ve got a copy of PDL which I use to review in context the claims made by his detractors as well as proponents. Have I read the whole thing, NO. But please get off this bent view that one must consume an entire rotten egg before one can aptly discuss that it was rotten - it is utter nonsense. The first time I tried to read it I was unable to because it had such a self-centered feel to it, despite his claim at the beginning that it is not about us, but rather it is about God.Greater minds than I have spoken loudly and conclusively on the problems with the teachings of Warren yet there are those who will see out of a genuine desire to seek the Truth, and there are those who unfortunately, and I mean that with all sincerity Peter, unfortunately are unable to see it or unwilling to see it because of any number of reasons.Several years ago I would have been in the middle group, but by the grace and mercy of God I was awakened to the truth and took the time to examine some of what PDL and Warren teach and also what he says publicly which is often even more alarming. But I digress. Let’s watch Sunday night and see what happens.

Hmmm.  I wonder who in scripture resorts to mocking.

    Enough.

I step away for one day, and some take advantage.

This is not a Rick Warren Bashing Forum.

We’ve been through this before guys, and you are disrespecting and taking advantage of this forum.

The post was simply an announcement of the Fox special.  Watch it or don’t watch it; it’s up to you.

But please ignore comments from BeHim, Jack, John 3:36 and others who try to take away from our discussion here at MMI about innovative ministry ideas.

Actually, comments will now be strictly moderated; so you may not have to ignore them after all.  smile

If you feel you must save people from the wickedness of Rick Warren, by all means, please do so; but do not feel free to use this forum.  It is no longer available to you.

The FOX News website has an interesting video with Warren describing his P.E.A.C.E. plan—you can watch it here, and they even have a bit of a discussion board going:

    Thanks, Marc,

He’s got a way with words. When I hear him talk about ending extreme poverty (or when I hear Bono talking about it, for that matter...) he makes me feel like it’s possible to do, and even that it’s inevitable. (Funny, Bono and Rick both even use the same example when they talk about it, they talk about JFK’s pledge to go to the moon, which was considered naive and mad at the time.)

I’ve seen some conflicting info on the time of this interview, though. I’ve seen 8pm and 10pm (both from the Fox site). Anybody know which it really is?

it’s listed in the FOX News schedule on their website as being at 8pm and repeating at 11pm:

  • This is very interesting, and sounds like something very much worth checking out.

    Well,

That was a horribly done newscast. I didn’t realize (because I avoid network news) how much Fox news is “info-tainment”. But I’ll give them credit, they managed to squeeze at least 90 seconds of content into an hour.

    wink

Here’s a (long) clip of a Charlie Rose show in which he directly asks RW “THE QUESTION” (as referred to on page one of these posts) and Rick responds.  Also an interesting interview with Gregory Boyd (The Myth of a Christian Nation)

Here’s the link - you may need to copy and paste it into your browser.

Thanks Dave - for the PBS link to Charlie Rose’s interview.  Couldn’t see the FOX special last night (church stuff to do).

I think Rick did really well on “the question,” especially as a guest on Charlie Rose’s turf. I listened to the whole thing and am scratching my head . . . what’s the beef???

I really agree with his comments about finding a “man of peace” and working with people who are of other faiths, from other perspectives (like gay/lesbian rights folks) to tackle issues about which we agree, like fighting poverty.

I wanted to stand up and cheer during the interview with Greg Boyd about the myth of a Christian Nation.

Yes, thank you, Dave, for that link.  I also found Warren’s response to the “question” to be very good, and I found nothing to criticize—and much to praise—in it.  The interview as a whole was very inspiring, and I think it is obvious that RW has been blessed with wisdom and insight concerning the global culture.  I hope and pray that God richly blesses his efforts to expand the Kingdom.

Did anyone actually watch the interview?  How did he conduct himself?  I heard a snippet of RW talking on the Fox News XM channel where he answered the question, “Can RW change the world?” with a “Most definitely not.” What else was said?  Is there a transcript available?

It wasn’t an interview (if you’re talking about the Fox thing) as much as an info-tainment fluff piece. No way to know how he “handled” himself, since it was so heavily edited. It was a disappointment in that way, but I still find Rick inspiring when he reminds me that together, we all CAN change the world, and are called to, in a sense…

I watched the link, but nothing else.  On the suface, it looks real good.  I wonder about the devil in the details,,, implies Rick is willing to partner with the Jews and Muslim’s, as well as Christians, to make it happen...???
