Choirs Behaving Badly

And you thought you had problems.  This from MSNBCCHARLOTTE HARBOR, FL —The pastor of a Charlotte Harbor church had 16 church members booted from a service after they allegedly refused to stop singing and let the clergyman preach…

Deputies were called at 10 a.m. Saturday by Pastor David Noel of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Harborview Road.

Noel told a deputy he was instructed by regional church superiors to involve law enforcement to remove the rogue choir.

The deputy issued trespass warnings to the group, and all 16 left the church without incident.

The sheriff's office got another call from the church shortly before noon when a parishioner wanted to file assault charges against Noel.

Edourd Pierrelus, 57, of Port Charlotte, said Noel got mad at him, hit him in the chest and twisted his earlobe during a church service a week earlier.

The man told the deputy the entire congregation of 25 witnessed the attack. Pierrelus said that because of the way the singing dispute was resolved, he now wanted to pursue charges of simple battery.

Deputies say the dispute is rooted in concerns about the handling of church funds. The members of the rogue choir told deputies they'd handle those concerns within the church.

And exactly WHY would anyone return to this church the next week?

    Perhaps for the drama?

    Church funds… again…

we need more pastors who desire to be “beyond reproach.” It isn’t that difficult, technically, to implement, but it can’t be done without a good heart.  Where’s the role-modeling?

If the churches were more interconnected, some peer pastors might be able to step-in and help.  Too many churches are their own islands… as if they have their own religion… but there’s truly only one body of Christ; Christ is not divided.

There could be an interesting court test of whether a “pastor” can have “paying customers” ejected.  How far can a person, who is essentially an employee, go in “firing” his/her employers?

I think the choir members should demand a refund of all of their tithes and then sue if they’re not refunded.

Bummer - MSNBC?  I was hoping this was a Lark News piece.  Just goes to show that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction…

A famous preacher (possibly Spurgeon) once said, “When Lucifer fell from heaven, he fell into the Choir loft.”

How very sad. It is easy to see a great demonic battle with all flesh responding instead of yielded hearts to Christ. I reckon that.....there must be some very important souls to harvest in that area.....My prayers are with them all.

When I read this I cringed.  The first church my husband and I served eventually asked us to leave because of problems occurring between several choir members and us.  All took the side of the choir members and we left.  The problems?  My husband asked one of the younger women to control her children in the sanctuary during choir rehearsal.  When the next pastor arrived the choir tried running the church again.  This time they had a seasoned pastor, rather than two newbies trying not to rock the boat, and he let them know nicely and firmly that he would be making the decisions they were trying to make.  Nothing to do with sermons, worship, polity or doctrine decisions but changes they wanted to make because they liked one pianist over another because the one they wanted was the friend of another person in the choir.  Choir politics!  Finally the trouble makers in the choir left.  The choir has settled down somewhat.  That particular church is still having problems though.  Why?  Because they believe that the mortgage payments they made makes the church belong to them.  Where is Christ in this church?  I don’t believe he has ever been invited to worship with them.

The choir asking for a refund?  The congregation should have applauded when they left. When did a choir ever have the power and authority to “run” the church.  Believe it or not, many church problems are caused by the choir.  The church belongs to God.

I have a good joke similar to this article.

There’s is this older gentleman who has sang in the choir for years and years. But his voice had started to crack and he couldn’t carry a tone like he use to. Next thing you know the choir began complaining about it to the choir leader and the choir leader complained to the pastor about this for weeks and weeks. Finally the pastor went to talk with him. After talking with him for about twenty minutes he finally began to tell him why he was there. “Mr. Johnson, the reason I came here today is to tell you that you cannot sing in the choir anymore.” Why stated Mr. Johnson. Because the whole choir is complaining about your singing. He said, that is nothing pastor, the whole church complains about your preaching.’
