Here are some comments made by Rick Warren at the United Nations interfaith prayer breakfast. (You can read the whole article here)…
"Whenever you get stressed out just remember God is God, and you're not. You see, whenever you start acting like you're God, there is a little light that comes up. It's called worry. You are trying instead of trusting God to make it work."
"The Bible says God is love. It doesn't say He has love. Love is the essence of His character. You were created to be loved by God. Being created in God's image, we are to love Him back."
"I'm not here to talk about religion. I'm here to talk about a relationship with God."
"It doesn't matter how much you accomplish. If at the end of the day you don't know God a little bit more and you don't love God a little bit more, you have just wasted your day."

“Methinks, speach is spelled speech? Whatsay?
Just wanted to know which God he was speaking about.Any mention of Jesus?
Pastor Warren was covered awhile back with those for his ministry and against posting.
I don’t wish to single him out but this is an alarming happening across all Christiandom. With many pastors and those in the limelight. Leaving out Jesus. But only when appropriate. As if one has a poor friend but when your friend that is wealthy greets you, your friend of lowly esteem receives no introduction. This past week I read a magazine article from last year. It was an article about a person in the entertainment industry who is known to be a Christian. This person talked about God a lot to the interviewer. Even said their children asked ‘God’ into their hearts at the ages of 3 1/2 and 4. This person only mentioned Jesus when asked their opinion about the Passion movie.
Is Christianity fast becoming the religion of inclusiveness? The early church would be repulsed. Believing in Christ is what got many of them killed. Jesus is so reduced by the litany of ‘God is love.’ Yes He is-love.
But there is no way to apply the divine love without the provision of the son.
Sometimes I think that well meaning on the right road ministers want to bring them in, make the gospel palatable, be shrinks etc. to a hurting world- all with the first idea at some point making sure they know about Christ and accept him. But then the largeness of it all overwhelms. The rationalization sets in. After all aren’t they doing the work of Christ? Who’s to say that they aren’t doing the real work, for look at the lives to prove it.
My advice is that they leave out Christian as a name. IF the church just preaches God on the streets,(be in at the UN or the television audience) that they call it an organization but not a Christian church. Still keep the non-profit status, for helping people socially they are. But if you take Christ out of Chrisitan you have no Messiah. Your belief system is something else but it definitely not Christian.
Beleiving Rick Warren is a man of God with a real relationshp through Jesus Christ, I beleive his message is from the Creator who in his mercy and grace, is gently drawing an unbeleiving world to him through this message. Baby steps, but steps, hopefully and prayerfully end at the feet of Jesus. “God Loves You” is the message I learned in preschool. Even today, I hold fast to that basic Truth of Christiandoom.
Enjoying the conversation about saying God versus Jesus. I think we are capitulating quite a bit. When Paul or Peter or any of the first apostles had opportunity, they mentioned the name of Jesus and told the story of His death, burial and resurrection. No fanfare, no pressure, but also no shrinking back. When we share it plainly, let’s let the Lord do the work! But if we don’t share it…
The more I hear about postmodernism and that form of reaching by creeping up on them, orthodoxy-wise, I believe we’ll miss the supernatural aspect of God’s moving.
Rick Warren is enjoying his 15 seconds of fame, I for one am not!
Tom,
Are you talking about Rick Warren’t 15 seconds of fame, or your own?
Great message. I love Pastor Warren’s ability to be real.He truly has a love for people.
It would have been nice to read the full text of his speech. It wasn’t in the link. We can’t make a judgement without seeing the full text.
Since it’s an interfaith event, you have to ask why he was there. I’m sure the participants weren’t there to hear a gospel presentation. Christians wouldn’t want to sit through some other religious presentation either. So it looks like he was just there to give them a interfaith pep talk, and maybe make some headlines for himself? Of all the places he could be, and all the work he could be doing, what was his motivation and reason for being there? Maybe it was a mission trip, and the real work was 1-1 behind the scenes… let’s hope so…

I was refering to the sudden popularity of Rick Warren, someone even stated that he’s this generations Billy Graham,… I don’t think so.
I agree with the comment made that the whole text would need to be given in order to give a full and fair evaluation of these comments. That aside me must never bow to the “god” of inclusivness that is sweeping the American church. This bland and tasteless form of religiousosity will turn away more people than it will ever attract. We must also turn away from the popular thought that predominate characterisitic of God is love. That is not Biblical. God is Holy. Read the entirety of scripture and you see this clearly. There is no Biblical basis to say to a sinner - “God Loves You” The Bible is clear that God cannot participate in a loving realtionship with a sinful human being. God does desire for people to enter into a loving relationship woth Himself through faith in Christ because of death and ressurection of Christ. Our message is a message of reconcilliation. That means we must tell people they seperated from God and they are not obejects of God’s love but of His wrath. His love is available for all but can only be recieved by entering into a realtionship with God by faith in Christ - repenting and accepting Him as Savior of your life.
Pastor Dan wrote:
1) ‘There is no Biblical basis to say to a sinner - “God Loves You“‘
Uh, what does John 3:16-17 say again? “God so loved the world… He did not send His son into the world to condemn the world...”
and 2) ‘The Bible is clear that God cannot participate in a loving realtionship with a sinful human being.’
I think I know what you MEANT, Pastor Dan: The love relationship cannot achieve fulfillment as long as it’s one-sided.
But Scripture is absolutely clear that God can and does extend love constantly to all of us sinners - to those who accept His forgiveness and repent, as well as those who do not. His grace and His mercy derive from His love for us “even while we were dead in our transgressions and sins… But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved.” (Eph. 2:1,4)
I think of Hosea and Gomer as a good biblical ‘picture.’ He loved her before she was “worth it” and kept loving her, even though their love relationship could not be what it was intended to be as long as it was unidirectional.
In that context, I think Rick’s attempts are always, including before the U.N. group, to try to find a way to communicate with the listeners in such a way that the love that God extends to those people every moment of every day can become two-way and fulfilling of God’s purpose.
As for the God/Jesus aspect of it, think of Paul’s message on Mars Hill about “The Unknown God” (Acts 17). Basically, he told these people “I KNOW that God you don’t know! Let me tell you some things about him.” Each of us has to rely on God’s Spirit to know how much to say, and what to say. By this I’m specifically referring to how detailed we are to get in each situation. As Bernie suggested, perhaps Rick was laying groundwork for small group or 1-1 conversations to get into the details. Or, perhaps he was building on individual conversations he’d already had with many of the listeners. Recall Paul’s statements about “Apollo plants, I water, etc., but God gets the increase.” Maybe he recognized the setting needed to be a multi-layered approach involving more than just him. I have to trust God to give Rick Warren the right words for the occasion.
With his track-record for the Kingdom, I simply have no reason to question whether he’s listening and responding to God far more than he might be screwing up because of ego, or personal sin, or whatever.
We can’t expect perfection in sinful human servants, but when His servants are in the limelight, we sure seem to.
LB - What you said in your last comment clarified what I wanted to communicate. The Bible is clear that God extends and offers His love to sinners, we love Him because He first loved us. What I wanted to emphasize was that sometimes we are not clear in how we communiacte this. If we over emphasize the love of God and do not keep it in balance with His holiness and judgement people will not see a need to repent and turn to God. If all we communicate is God loves you people will assume that they are OK with God - “He loves me” surely I’ll go heaven.
Thanks for clarifying what I said, you hit the nail on the head.
The only other comment I might make is be careful with how you interpret the OT prophets. Hosea and Gomer’s realtionship was specifiaclly designed as a picture of God’s relationship with Israel.
It sounds like Pastor Dan should be at the UN meeting. That was a great political answer, but not very honest. You clearly said, “There is no Biblical basis to say to a sinner - ‘God Loves You’”.
It is true that Jesus is the only means to obtain the glorious salvation. But people must also know God the Father. They must be introduced to His nature of love and see the basis for offering His only begotten Son for our eternal peace. If we don’t tell sinner of God’s love, why should they listen to anything else. There are plenty willing to preach judgment, but how many truly love people?
With that said, I believe it is quite useless to debate Rick Warren’s intentions or motivations. What would be useful is to pray for each soul that was present at that prayer meeting and that by God’s grace they would listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit before it is eternally too late.
“LB”, you said everything perfect. Pastor Dan
