Focus on the Family Layoffs:  More than Economic?

Orginally published on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 at 9:34 AM
by Todd Rhoades

I was actually quoted in a Colorado Springs newspaper article about Focus on the Family's recent layoffs. Other than that, it is a really good article, and asks some great questions. Here's a snippit:

..."Supporters and critics of the Colorado Springs-based Christian ministry have been quick to question whether more is at play than hard times alone. Has its high-profile political stances hurt its public relations? Is its audience aging or shrinking? Did it reach a peak that, for some reason, has passed?"

You can read the whole article here...

What do you think?

    The COO Glenn Williams said:

“The organization, simply put, can reach more people with fewer employees. And some changes are about improved efficiency.”

Even though it doesn’t always feel like an abundance of resources, we Americans have sooooooo much more in the way of disposable ministry resources than most Christian ministers on this planet.  Regardless of the reasons for the downturn in income at Focus, reaching more people with fewer employees and improving efficiency is what we should all do all of the time.  Isn’t that stewardship?

I know that in my community every single NPO, faith-based and secular, is looking at job cuts and other ways to keep the doors open, not to mention the families and small businesses that support us.

I think this recession is going to do some great things for our paradigms.

But I still have trouble with $600,000 donor dollars spent to pass Prop 8 in CA.

It was clear a few years ago, that they were losing clout as they became more focused on the political movement in the U.S.  Changing policy rather than changing hearts.  We are at a paradigm shift.

Tom doesn’t know the price of raised floor, but he knows the laminate flooring price . His classmates, Jenny, likes raised access floor, but she doesn’t like engineered flooring.
