Guglielmucci’s Wife:  I’m Gonna Make This Work

There's been much written about Pastor Michael Guglielmucci and his recent admission that his terminal illness was fake, and that it was a lie that perpetuated out of him trying to hide his long-time addiction to pornography. I think my friend, Brad Lomenick, put it as well as anyone when he wrote, "Michael needs us as the body of Christ now more than ever. Just ask all the other people of influence we’ve left in the ditch. He’s battling with sin, the same sin that we all battle with every day. Whether lust, or lying, or pride, or adultery, or deceit, or slander. There by the grace of God go I."

But someone who may need our prayers as much as Michael (just as much, if not more) would be his wife, Amanda. Can you imagine facing your wife after you faked a terminal illness for two years, and on top of that, admitted to a long-time habit of pornography. I know I can't. But it appears that wife Amanda is supporting and standing by her husband. In an interview with an Australian newspaper, she insists that he is a good man, who was trapped by lies that had spiralled out of control...

“I know he’s not an evil man, there’s not evil in his heart,” she said.

Mrs Guglielmucci, who is staying in their Sydney home while Michael is with his family in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, said she would try to salvage her marriage.

“I know that I love him, I know that much,” she said.

“We’re just not going to rush anything, we’re gonna walk through the process, however slowly it needs to happen, in order for the healing and restoration to be complete and then we’ll go from there.”

She has turned to a counsellor to help cope with her husband’s massive deception, which has shocked not only his family’s church, Edge Church International, but the world-wide Christian movement.

“I’m actually seeking professional counselling myself. I need to be able to unravel a lot of emotion that’s bombarding me at the moment, I owe it to myself to work through that properly, and to him,” she said.

“I had questions after the shock of it all, but my initial thoughts after hearing that were a sense of sorrow for the church and that a lot of people were going to be hurt because of it.”

When I heard about this musician and the story of what he went through, it both saddened and angered me.  It’s sad, because the song was something in which many people felt that God was comforting them, and now many feel betrayed.  It’s also angering, because this is another “evangelical” shortfall in the news headlines that just adds to the pile.

And I know that the “new” CS is trying so desperately to be discerning instead of being critical, but I have to point something out within this article that underscores a lot of the story itself.

“she insists that he is a good man, who was trapped by lies that had spiralled out of control…

“‘I know he’s not an evil man, there’s not evil in his heart,’ she said. “

That’s the problem.  I’m sorry, but he’s not a good man.  He has lied and betrayed many with his false stories.  He admits to being an adulterer at heart.  Like it says in Jeremiah 17, just like the rest of us, his heart is deceitfully wicked.  And I’m just as guilty as he is.

I sincerely, truly hope that through this process, this man repents of his sins and places his trust in Jesus Christ, so that God can be glorified for redeeming him.  And while I know the quotes above were from his wife, and not from him, unless he sees himself as fallen sinner, who has done evil to God Almighty and those who admired him, he will not be made right.

    Good on her!

Praying that she really does find the strength through Christ to stay with her husband.

She must have actually meant it when she spoke those vows.  These are the times that test that commitment.

Talk about a punch in the spiritual gut.  That’s how I felt when I read about this last week.  To tarnish your own reputation and integrity is one thing.  But to drag Hillsong and it’s reputation for incredible Christ-centered worship into this is absolutely pitiful.  To watch his “Healer” video on YouTube, knowing it was an absolute HOAX, was almost more than I could bear.  Yes, I must err on the side of mercy.  But I’m having a hard time underestimating what this man has done--with premeditation and calculation over an extended period of time.  I feel incredibly sorry for the Christian community.

It really stinks to hear that the illness behind this song is a fake. It hurts a lot. But that does not make the truth of the words of the song any less true. As a matter of fact, when Micheal comes out on the other side of this ordeal it will prove the song even more. I say this because Micheal is ill, far more ill than anyone ever suspected and when God heals him from this spiritual illness it will prove even more so that He is a healer.

  • She looks so happy! and why not if she feels loved and she found the love that is not easy to find, and I mean true love based on respect and communication. Congratulations for this wedding.
