Hard Times for Liberty University Democrats Club

Orginally published on Monday, June 01, 2009 at 8:12 AM

According to NewsAdvance.com: Liberty University’s College Democrats club members were trying to draft two documents — a new constitution and a clarification of their comments to news media — Wednesday after meeting with Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. and other administrators.

The new constitution could allow the club to regain official status after LU revoked its recognition because the club supported the Democratic Party’s pro-choice platform and candidates.

But any official acceptance will wait until the club has retracted and apologized publicly for statements that accused an LU official of saying that Democrats couldn’t be Christians, and that the school told club members they couldn’t hold meetings, Falwell said...

Maria Childress, the club’s staff adviser, said Falwell and other administrators criticized the club strongly for its comments to the news media last week. The meeting Wednesday lasted almost two hours.

Falwell and Childress said LU expects the club to retract a statement that accused Mark Hine, vice president of student affairs, of telling Childress and club officer Jan Dervish that a person could not be both a Democrat and a Christian.

“Mark Hine personally is due an apology and retraction, and Liberty was slandered and lies were told, and it needs to be corrected,” Falwell said.

Childress said Wednesday night that “we are working on a response” that should be ready in 48 hours, but the club hadn’t decided whether it would include a retraction and apology.

Childress said during at least one interview last week that Hine essentially held that Democrats couldn’t be Christians.

The comment was widely repeated in news articles and on Internet sites, and it led to Hine’s being dubbed by a cable TV commentator as one of the “worst people in the world,” Falwell said.

During the Wednesday meeting, Hine insisted he never said Democrats couldn’t be Christians. “That’s patently false,” Falwell quoted Hine as saying. “I never said anything like that. I don’t believe that,” Falwell continued to quote Hine as saying.

While it is hard for many to understand how someone could view themselves as a Democrat AND a Christian, we have to see that just because the more ‘well-known’ representatives and policies that come from that party don’t exactly show the ‘fruit’ of Christianity, doesn’t exactly mean that everyone who considers themselves a ‘Democrat’ agrees with all those thoughts…

It’s true that while the Democrat platform tends to exploit the poor/disenfranchised, tends to be pro-choice, and appears to try to use the ‘global warming’ hysteria so that they can manipulate and fund certain things--the Republicans only appear more ‘Christian’ by comparison (which doesn’t say much).

Some are called to politics and I definitely encourage that but I find that while it’s VERY normal to have strong feelings about the politics, we have to decide whether we are going to be pastors or politicians.  I say that because we diminish our abilities to impact and influence people when we align ourselves with a candidate or a political party.  There are few things as polarizing as politics.  When we put an Obama (or whoever) sticker on our car we GREATLY (sometimes totally) lose our influence on anyone who doesn’t agree with Obama (or whoever the case might be).  The thing is that while politics are important, we have to remember that our primary goal is to spread the word of God, NOT stump for a candidate or hot issue…

It’s hard because we naturally have strong feelings about things like politics, but we have to keep God our focus and the Good News our primary message.  A friend of mine once said, “if you’re identity is wrapped up in anything other than Christ, you’re headed for trouble...”.  I have found that to be true…

It wouldn’t surprise if Hine did say that or something very close.  I think this is also a poor example in an institution of higher learning that a club would not be allowed to be on campus because of certain views that they “might” support or that their party supports.

Last time I checked, Jesus never mentioned political affiliation as a prerequisite to be a Christ follower. He chose a more significant path - deny self, take up cross and follow Him.

  • I think it is a great idea to start a club. It would give him a way to get involved at school, and he could meet a lot of people. Plus, this would give him something to do after school (I don’t know what other activities he is involved in), and it would allow him to show his point of view in many different things. Getting involved in “politics” at any age is always interesting, and it could be fun.
