Here's a great synopsis from a recent article in the Harvard Business Review over at Leading Blog: Sports psychologist and executive coach Graham Jones believes that the real key to excellence in both sports and business is mental toughness. In the current Harvard Business Review he writes that the most successful people do five things to get better and stay that way.

These all point to a teachable heart and a sense of self-awareness. Without those two ingredients a leader will always become his own lid for growth.

#1 has been the most challenging for me, and yet also the area I have seen the most growth in. I have a natural bent not to love the pressure.

Dave,
I would say that sometimes that is because the pressure comes from so many places. Finances in a church is probably the most difficult thins I deal with. That is a pressure I find hard to love. Reaching the lost, that is a pressure I love. Growing the found? Love it! Helping the hurting? Love it! Leading a staff? Casting Vision? Teaching the word? Praying for the church? Love it! Love it! Love it! But for me, finances can at times cast such a huge shadow I miss loving the pressure.

My solution to this has been a lot of prayer, great teams around me and a clear vision that says; Helping people become better stewards of God’s resources is a deeply spiritual and pastoral duty.”

Enough of the OBSESSION with being a leader. It reeks of boasting, a bloated sense of self importance and pride. The Holy Spirit (on the behalf of the Father and the Son) is our leader. A church worker is nothing more than another part of the Body of Christ.... one that constantly has to be in meetings, blogging, talking about stress and pressure, plagiarizing, and booking his/her next conference trip.
