Letting Go (a little at a time)

Early this morning, we dropped off our oldest son, Taylor. He is leaving today for a 10 day youth mission trip to Biloxi, MS. His group will be helping rebuild a couple houses destroyed from Hurricane Katrina. I was so excited and proud of Taylor when he decided (on his own) that he wanted to go on this trip. Now he's gone (and since my wife and I will be on vacation for a few days while he's gone as well, we won't see him for almost two weeks). It's all part of starting to let go, I guess...

If you get a chance over the next few days, would you pray for Taylor and for his entire group?  My prayer is that this will be a trip that they will each look back on for years to come as a real spiritual turning point in their lives.  I pray that each one grows in their faith; and in their character as they give to others who really need help.

Taylor’s the second one from the right in the front row.

Will most definitely pray for Taylor and the group. Mom and dad too. Hey? Just a thought here: Have Taylor and possibly some of the other kids write about it when they return. Post their stories here on MMI.

In regards to letting go? I always have to remind myself that while I call them “my own,” they are not. I’d rather have a kid who wants to go help others because of his love for Jesus than stay at home and just talk about it.

Taylor is walking the walk. Cannot wait to hear just a portion of the results.

Yes, Todd, I’m praying for your family right now. Camey is right! I want to read about this on MMI! Any way he can write posts while he’s on the trip? Incidentally, our church is next week sending our third group to MS for the same kind of rebuilding… rebuilding that will take years, perhaps a decade, by the way!

What a blessing to have raised a young man with a heart to serve others!  I’ll be praying for them as they work in that MS heat. We know all about that in Houston.  We have sent out numerous teams to do the same work in a small town in LA - I’m glad other areas are not being fogotten.  As much as N.O. deserves all the help they can get we need to keep in mind the countless small towns that were devastated.  We know in Houston we could be next too!  We almost were - thanks Rita!  Please have your son post when he gets back
    Blessings!

    Todd,

Letting go is one of the odd paradoxical events that makes up being a parent. I have sons who are at this moment 23, 18 and 16. You work hard to help them develop the skills to be independent, and then have that ache when they achieve it.. You miss them but don’t want them to be held back.

But one foot note to all of this is that they often do come back, more than once. They “boomerang” right back home when they have fallen on tough times. Launching may take more than shot. So enjoy the ride it is worth it.
