Mark Driscoll To Publish Study Bible

Our friends at InternetMonk.com have the skinny on all the new study Bibles coming out this year. Tim Keller has a new "Reason for a Study Bible" Study Bible hitting bookstores in the fall. Al Mohler has an "Encyclopedic Punditry Study Bible" that will be sold exclusively at Lifeway Stores. And Paula White has the "What the ..." Study Bible that will be out in the spring. But the one that I can't wait to get my hands on is the Mark Driscoll R-Rated Study Bible for Dudes. Here's the description...

The Mark Driscoll R-Rated Study Bible for Dudes. Freak out your reformed Baptist friends with Mark Driscoll’s comedic, rude and radically male centered interpretations of scripture. This is a study Bible that reaches the emerging culture while denouncing the emerging church. A fashion section helps you to see the scriptural mandates for mechanic’s shirts and hemp necklaces. Puzzlingly endorsed by John Piper, an alternative sheet of negative endorsements from various reformed bloggers is available on request. Profanity in red letters. Crude and shocking sexual episodes in blue. Bible doctrine is related to MMA throughout.

Read more about the other new Bibles coming out here at InternetMonk.com...

OK… just in case you didn’t get the joke… this IS a joke.  No Mark Driscoll study bible… no profanity in red letters; or sexual episodes in blue.  There’s no Kelly study bible either.  Matter of fact, I love both guys and their ministries!

Why would anybody be such a poor steward of God’s time to even write something so idiotic… much less create graphics and the like.  Why do we constantly post this dribble on this site.  Monday Morning insite NOT… more like saturday night blindness.  Dear God deliver us from this modern Christianity.

We should be able to laugh at ourselves! Shane I dont think it was a waste of time, if you are really serious about that comment. I don’t think that God intended for us to live our lives like we are going to a funeral and to be serious every waking moment.
I think it was a light hearted thing to make us laugh. If this “Modern Christianity” so be it! Praise God that we have humor still despite the world around us and everything horrible going on.

I am glad that we can laugh too, it just seems that when I read this site it is so often something I would consider “off color” or not in “good taste” I cannot pin point it in words as I am not the most articulate person but I just don’t think talking about R-rated bibles and having sex stuff in a certain color is all that funny.  It just seems contrary to scripture.  I am all for good clean fun and frivolity but why do Christian try so hard to be so “edgy” and close to the edge of sinfulness or think this is so hilarious.  I love Christian comedians but I just don’t think it is just a lame Christian attempt at “shock jock” for Christians.  Why would we want to take our cues from the world?  I just think we should be above the pale, even in our humor and not in the toilet.  That is all I am saying.  If my 7 year old read this what would he think?  If he is not old enough to be exposed to it, then there is something not quite right with it.  Not trying to be a stick in the mud just don’t like what “modern Christians” find funny or even acceptable.

Shane we are tempted to ask of you:
“Why would anybody be such a poor steward of God’s time to even read this site if they think it is so idiotic?”

I need some light relief for my Monday Morning Insight, and this is where I can find some, more often than not.

I appreciated the humor.  So many Christians take themselves too seriously.  They are more concerned with appearances than they are with ministry.  The way we spend our time is indicative of our values.

The Lord has really been dealing with me about my ministry, and His mission.  We spend too much time ministering to ourselves in the four walls of our offices and churches.

Yes, there are ministers that are out in the trenches, but too many of us expect the hurt and lost to come to us.  On occasion, they may come to us, but that is not what Jesus said, and that is not what Jesus did.  I have made a commitment to spend at least one hour a day out in the mission field that God has led me too, my community.  You will probably find me in a bar having a diet coke being a friend to sinners.  I might even laugh at some of their jokes.  But it’s not about me, it’s about Jesus.

Quite frankly, I am by disgusted by many in the church.  They don’t laugh, and they don’t minister.  Is this true of everyone?  No.  Is this true of MOST?  Absolutely!  So take a little time to laugh, because if you don’t, you’ll lose sight of what HIS Mission is.  Now Go!

Thanks Todd for giving us some comedy relief before we hit the streets.

“If 7 year old read this what would he think?  If he is not old enough to be exposed to it, then there is something not quite right with it.”

No disrespect, but I would not let a 7 year old shave with a razor, drive a car, drink coffee, see a pg-13 movie, stay up past 8:30 pm on a school night or work a steady job. Does this mean that I should not be doing these things as a adult? The point being that MMI is for adults and it’s ok if a child would not understand or appreciate everything on here. I personally appreciate the content and the humor. Thanks Todd.

    Peter,

You know how he would translate skubalon!  I am pretty certain he has done it before.

Howdy Peter and J.J. and the others that took acceptation to my post.  I have been standing on the parking lot of the local Food Mart / liquor store telling me people about Jesus.  I have been to the local jail visiting inmates.  I know about “being in the trenches”.  Most people actually think I am pretty fun and pretty funny to be around.  In fact I told my wife in a joking manner… if it wasn’t for me and the hot sauce she was eating, she would have no spice in her life.  I love the comedy that comes from the “Banana” shows with Thor Ramses (Christian Comedy and quite funny).  I am not real worried about what “religious” people think of me or my appearance.  I understand that there is a difference between a 7 year old having the deft to shave or drive a car and the moral innocence and pureness to not understand the adult humor of a PG-13, PG OR R and above rated movies.  I personally don’t think Christ would watch a PG or above rated movie or want his children to watch that trash.  The things they depict are the reason that he was crucified.  Can we not as Christians understand that?

Whoever commented on me not being a good steward of my time by reading this site since I think most of it is idiotic… let me explain.  I go to sites like this and http://www.sliceoflaodicea.com/ so I will have illustrations to teach my congregation what kind of trash has infiltrated the modern Church.  When Christians think this stuff is okay and acceptable then wonder why our Churches are going down the tubes, have no influence in society and our children are backsliding in droves.  It is only because most of the parents have already backslid in droves or never were saved (had a true life changing / salvation experience with God) in the first place.  We don’t influence society because they lost respect of the Church long ago and it was not because we were stuffy and un-entertaining and too serious.  Just the opposite.  We are looser, more entertainment driven, more jovial and joking that I think any other time in history.  Yet we probably have less public trust and influence that any other time in history.  WHY?  Because we moved away from the serious message of the cross so we could appeal to a wider audience.  We have employed modern marketing strategies that were meant to be applied to secular commercial businesses not a spiritual organism.  Just tell Paul or Jesus they were too serious and didn’t laugh enough.  I think they were both DEAD serious and yet could enjoy life and a good clean laugh.  The problem is we are not serious enough and will laugh at the most ungodly, hell inspired humor and then throw rocks at anyone that say “You shouldn’t do that.  It is immoral”

I know that I will not change any of your minds.  Those that think I am wrong will continue to think I am wrong and those that agree with me will (by the grace of God) continue to agree with me.  I just say please think about what I have to gain by speaking these words in this forum.  I am not getting paid to do this.  I am not gaining fame or fortune.  I am not going to benefit in anyway.  I am just concerned over the state of society and the state of the modern Church.  Please just consider my words and truly pray about them.  Allow the Spirit of God and the word of God along with our conscience to exam our heart and see if we are closer to lining up with Gods words and will or Satan’s.  God says this is the way it is and I don’t bend or lean or waiver.  Satan says, well did God really say, it is not really that bad.  Just one bite won’t hurt a thing.  God says this is what I say and the devil says… I doubt that is really what God meant.  Sincerely your brother in Christ.  SCA

Shane, I think where you are coming from is that you want to be the salt of the earth.  But remember, salt is a seasoning that is best when sprinkled on lightly.  Guess what happens when you dump the whole shaker of salt onto one french fry.....

Peter, I appreciate your responce and your illustration makes a good point.  If we were talking physical food I couldn’t agree more.  But I don’t think we have to worry too much about the modern Christian being to salty.  the problem we have is the same one Jesus mentioned.  Not too much salt but the salt losing its savor.  I can’t think of a time that Jesus mentioned preaching the gospel to much or in fact being too salty.  But he did say pray for laborers becasue the harvest is plenty but the workers are few.  PLEASE DON’T GET ME WRONG!  I am coming across quite strong, I think, in the typed words of my responce.  I don’t go around condeming people to hell and yelling and screaming at people but I am also very concerned with again what I call the modern Christian mindset.  It really bothers me to no end that we find this stuff funny and humorous without even looking at it and thinking “is this something that Jesus would be okay with.” “Profanity in red letters. Crude and shocking sexual episodes in blue” I can just see Jesus in heaven as the lamb that was slain from the foundation of the earth… just laughing til his side hurts at this one (maybe even the side that was pierced becuase of mans profanity and crude shocking episodes.  Man that is really funny.

I would like to submit a request:  How would this so-called “study Bible” interpret Ephesians 5:1-17?  I’d like to see the notes on that as it relates to this discussion.  Fact is, any “Dude” worth his “following Christ” salt would wrestle with this whole discussion as it relates to the above passage.  Any Takers?

Maybe I am off base but...seriously, IT’S A JOKE.  Todd Rhoades even said that.  Someone (imonk) was just trying to poke fun at the over abundance of over-marketed study Bibles, and while imonk was at it he had a lot of fun with some of the contemporary issues and ministers in the Church.

For those who don’t know, Mark Driscoll is a preacher who has been known to drop some cuss words, talks about sex (just recently preached or is preaching a series on Song of Solomon), enjoys watching mixed martial arts (MMA) and sees himself as a man’s man, or a dude preaching the gospel in one of the most unchurched cities in America.  The study Bible idea mocks Mark Driscoll and makes fun of him and his quirks.

This has nothing to do with what modern Christianity finds as funny.  This is again about the over abundance of strategically marketed study Bibles.  Go to a Christian book store or shop online and see.  It’s ridiculous how many different study Bibles there are.

If you think it’s funny then laugh.  If you think it’s offensive then be at ease because it’s not real.  There is NO actual study and even if Mark Driscoll or any of the others imonk mentions made a study Bible I doubt seriously they would be like this or that they would even do a study Bible.

    Fight about more important things!

    all about Christ,

David Buckham… at least you have shed a little light on the situation.  I had no idea who Mark Driscoll was.  Sounds like he is the kind of guy that would actually try to put out a study bible like this though.  “Shock jock for Christians”.  I still lament the direction Christianity and the church is going these days and I am only 39.  So I don’t consider myself an old fogey.  By the way I actually like MMA myself.  See ya, sca

Todd, dude!  I go away for a little while and I come back and decide to check out MMI again and what do I find?  A bunch of (expletive deleted) arguing about the merits of funny (or not funny) satirical article about the over-abundance of study bibles and Mark Driscoll.

Folks, it’s satire.  Get it or don’t get it, but get over it.  If you don’t think Driscoll is funny, I’m sure he’s OK with that.  If you find him offensive, he’s OK with that too.

If you find fault with WHAT he teaches (not HOW he teaches) then he would probably want to know and be concerned.

If you are not familiar with Driscoll, go to youtube and watch some videos of him teaching and preaching.  I think he’s truly gifted.  It could be a real eye opener.
