Moving Your Church from Analog to Digital:  10 Suggestions

Brian Orme gives us ten quick suggestions on how to move your church from an ‘analog’ church to a ‘digital’ church.  You can read his full posting at his blog… Using technology in worship is more about the way people communicate and connect than it is about being relevant…

9.  Being a digital storyteller is a holistic mix of interpretation and translation, integrity and integration, technical and creative--it's not to be compartmentalized.  (Digital Storytellers).

8.  In using new technology in worship--whether in church or in the daily routine--the ipastor takes on the role of visionary and educator.

7.  Three words...Technology is art.

6.  Using powerpoint does not qualify for transitioning from analog to digital.  Digital church is more incarnational than the presentational methods--a.k.a. the business model with bullet points.

5.  The digital revolution allows churches to experience connection throughout the week--through blogs, podcasts, and other digital media.

4.  Digital media doesn't take the place of community--it's a tool that has the possibility of enhancing it.

3.  We point people to God, not technology.  Ultimately, worship is an intimate experience--a dialogue with God.  Technology only opens the doors for greater connection to the story God is telling.

2.  When it comes to technology (and ministry)--start out by doing two things well--not a hundred things crappy.

1.  Creating digital worship is interactive and communitive--not static.  Embrace relationships tighter than technology but use technology to build connections.

This kind of goes nicely with a post we had recently about technology and making sure that you don't let the technology take over.  These steps will help you stay balanced.

FOR DISCUSSION:  I like #2... do you have a tendency in your church to do a hundred things 'crappy' and nothing really 'well'?  Something to think about.  smile  What two things does your church do well?

Good stuff! As an ex-communications director for a church of 5000+ this is what I tried to preach to our teaching team and ministry leaders who loved how “sexy” technology is for the church but didn’t know how to integrate or use it. People need to remember that technology is just a tool--an accelerator. If something is bad to start with technology will just accelerate it faster in that bad direction. It has very little power to make something good that was bad to begin with.

The list could really be reduced to just 1-4. Especially 2 & 4. These are said really well! Tattoo these onto the foreheads of your communicators at your church or ministry who leverage their communciations with technology.

    This is good stuff Todd!
