I just received word of a terrible accident. The five year old daughter of Steven Curtis Chapman was killed Wednesday afternoon while playing in the driveway of the Chapman home. According to reports, five year old Maria's teenage brother accident struck her in their driveway. I can't think of a worse nightmare for a parent or a family. So, could you please stop right now and pray for the Chapman family? Thanks! You can read the news report here...
One of contemporary Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman’s six children was killed this afternoon when she was struck by a car said to be driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the family’s Williamson County home.
The child, Maria, age 5, was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Hospital, which confirmed the death, according to Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
She was hit by an SUV driven by her teenage brother, she said. Police did not give the driver’s name.
The teen was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser down the driveway of the rural home at about 5:30 p.m. and several children were playing in the area, McPherson said. He did not see the 5-year-old in the driveway before the vehicle struck her, she said.
“It appears to be a terrible accident,’’ McPherson said.
No charges are expected, she said. The accident was witnessed by two other children; the entire family was home at the time, McPherson said.
Veteran singer/songwriter Chapman and his wife Mary Beth have long been supporters of international adoption, having brought three girls from China into their family. Maria is one of their adopted daughters.
The couple is so active they formed an organization, Shaohannah’s Hope, to aid families wanting to adopt.
The tragedy was announced during services at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ, which the family attends. The young girl had just graduated from the church preschool.
Most of the family was at Vanderbilt children’s hospital after the accident and could not be contacted.
The long gravel driveway leading to the home west of Franklin was blocked off by Williamson County sheriff’s deputies.
“The critical response team of the THP is reconstructing the accident,” McPherson said. “The district attorney’s office was consulted.”

I just heard this news about an hour ago and have been praying for the Chapmans ever since. We have watched this family growing step-by-step through the years and are heartbroken to hear of Maria’s death. Praying for all members of the Chapman family tonight.
Much prayer from here too.
I am simply beside myself. Very terrible, very horrible.
A brilliant husband, father and songwriter.
May God fill the void left with His gracious presence.
Such sadness, the family is in my prayers, too.
Oh my, what a heartbreak. I heard this on the local late news. Certainly will keep this family lifted up in prayer.

My family is a fellow “forever family” from China. Our little girl is now 1 1/2 and has been with us for 9 months now. This is a tragedy that is beyond conprehension..loosing a child, that they have only known for 3 years, is horrible.
BUT..I am praying for the son. I hope he knows that we all know that he would NEVER do anything to intentionally hurt his sisters! We know that that is the most loving family and that those girls were very special to all of them! My heart just hurts tremedously! Our bio children are special, but those Chinese babies are just as special and with all you go though to get them, that makes this situation even more tragic.!! Have been, am and will continue to be in prayer for the whole family...esp the brother!!
There is so many small issues on which we may not agree, but the body of Christ can agree on so many issues, especially when there is a hurting family and there is the need for prayer. I can’t imagine the grief the young driver must be feeling.
i have prayed for this family and i am so devasted this has happend to them. I pray the LORD keep his hands upon the family during this time.

We are all bearing this loss. We love you and we lift your family in prayer, Jesus send your comforter, the Holy Spirit. Be with this family during this deep loss. Take away any guilt or shame anyone may be feeling for this loss. God you are always in control. Our lives belong to You. Let Your presence surround them in a greater way more than ever before. We pray a covering over all of their children at this time of great trial. Lord I pray a 50 foot thick iron wall around this family so that nothing can touch them or bring harm to them. Father, they are covered by Your blood . You are faithful and very close in times of need. Rend the heavens and come down and sit with this family. Send people their way to encourage them and lift them up. Direct them and be their voice right now during times of making dicisions. i pray in Jesus name Amen the Lords peace is with you
Still praying.
Like so many others have written, when I heard about this terrible, sad news I cried my eyes out. Just a few days ago i sat in my car a little longer just to listen to"Cinderella" on K-LOVE. We know God is with us through ALL things and will never leave or forsake us and I join so many in praying for Steven Curtis Chapman and his dear, precious family.
May God comfort and keep them in His tender loving care.
