Pastors Rick Warren of Saddleback Community Church (Lake Forest, CA) and Ed Young of Fellowship Church (Grapevine, TX) have announced a new joint business venture: a new clothing line to be featured nationally at "The Gap".
"By combining the standard hawaiian shirts made popular by Rick Warren and the hip, culturally relevent style of Ed Young, we think we have a hit," said Gap VP of merchandising Peg Winterhaven. "We expect inventory to be tight as pastors swarm The Gap to purchase these new designs." An initial order of 300,000 units has been purchased from suppliers.
Purpose-Driven Life author Rick Warren says he's delighted with the designs. "You know, it's not about me... but if it was, I'd purchase one of each design just because they're so cool." Warren says he's giving the proceeds from shirt sales to AIDS relief among alcoholic un-wed mothers off the coast of Uganda.
Pastor Ed Young, pastor of the large Dallas-area mega-church, says the new clothing line will make his life much easier. "Now when people ask me where I get my shirts, I can tell them 'where to go'".
Not to be outdone by his son, the Rev. Ed Young, Sr., pastor of the huge Second Baptist Church of Houston, said he is in the final stages of closing a deal for his own clothing line with The Men's Warehouse. Details are pending.

Now that is what I call a fashion statement man… Are they going to call it “The Purpose Culture Clothing Line”.. I know,I know… Don’t be funny right… That was a little dry…
Gotta get me some so I’ll be relevant and my church will grow!
I do so hope this is our Friday joke.
Yeah, Sarangel… just my LAME attempt at humor.

I should have known - it’s still early for me. And besides, Ed’s shirts aren’t usually that bad.
I love the “quote” by Warren…
“It’s not about me...”
Each shirt is made from five different colors of fabric, symbolizing the five purposes of the church…
I wonder if they come with flip flops too.
RW - the new OP!
Will those shirts make me look fat?
These shirts will make me look PHAT!!
Bishopdave: No they won’t. I just checked it out dude. They are getting intouch with Don Ho to start a collection that has a tummy tucker in them....
Clair, you may note have noted bishopdave’s intentional use of the word ‘phat’ instead of ‘fat’--read: snowboard lingo for ‘cool’. But tummy tuckers are a good idea…
That is very considerate of them to put out a line of clothing that will match anything their wives wear as every color is included in each shirt!
Hey, I think we should cover all the bases here… How about one of those hotly debated “hell sucks” t-shirts underneath a Benny Hinn no-collar shirt left unbuttoned. Gotta have some shorts and flip-flops to complete the look. I hear the Gap has a deal going – buy the whole “Pastor’s Pack” and get a free holster for your Holy Spirit Machine Gun.
I was on my way to thew Gap to put my order in… then I realized it was Friday...When will it ever end!!??
I don’t know. I am underwhelmed and a little worried. This type of marketing in some circles will draw criticism from some groups within the church ... I know we are to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. But, I don’t live in Southern California or South Texas where this is probably the normal “business attire.” Please, I am not being overly negative...just a little concerned.
On the business side...Go Ed & Rick! This is a good marketing move.
i don’t know what this is all about but these type of fashion is a common thing among the Congo people in Africa. They really love those shirts.

Hey Gee,
It’s a joke! Lighten up… it’s not true. Total satire.
Besides, seriously… how would this shirt be ‘conforming to the world’?

1 John 2:15-16 (New American Standard Bible)
Do Not Love the World
15Do not love (A)the world nor the things in the world (B)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For all that is in the world, (C)the lust of the flesh and (D)the lust of the eyes and (E)the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
The Second Book of Peter, Chapter 3
Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come
deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the
time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were
from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were
before, and the earth out of water, and through water,
consisting by the word of God.
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water,
perished.
7 But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word
are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of
judgment and perdition of the ungodly men.
8 But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one
day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years
as one day.
9 The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but
dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should
perish, but that all should return to penance.
10 But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the
heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements
shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which
are in it, shall be burnt up.
11 Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what
manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and
godliness?
Oh… not sure how I missed that before.
huh?

I’m with Todd.... It’s a Joke!

I know we all need a good laugh now and then. When focusing on “Church Work” constantly, which is the case when you hold a position in most organized, business-like, churches....the supposed “traditional” /post modern church........one is prone to burn-out without a little levity. I think Gee’s concern is that there always needs to be a true word spoken somewhere in the mix to prevent a “misconstruing” of the intent. I’m certain that is what Gee intended to help out with. It’s certainly all about the Love of our heavenly Father.....which includes a readiness to speak the truth whenever He leads us to, and the ability to laugh at ourselves within God’s merciful embrace, while on this Journey...just like Jesus.
I want to know why we have to keep shipping our money overseas. Can’t Rick or Ed find needy children (even orphans whose parents died from AIDS)? We have so many foster children who need placement in good loving homes. We have so many starving children right here in the Midwest anyway (I’m sure there are 4 or 5 hungry ones in Texas or California).
