Maybe you missed this, but this week the Southern Baptist Convention adopted an official song and music video to help promote their anti-alcohol stance. Someone high up in the SBC commissioned theologian and song writer Tim Hawkins to write and perform a song to back up their view that Christians should totally abstain from Alcohol. Warning: It's very provocative, especially for the SBC:

Would somebody please get me a beer...if for no other reason than to keep me from turning into a wuss, because that is totally testosterone-deprived. Theologian-songrwriter-overly-sensitive-singer-guy makes me want to puke...in somebody’s ear.
Amen! Awesome! You could not have done better.
Hahaha! That is hilarious!
Please tell the lovers and the haters, however that this is a “Weird Al” type of parody song of an old song by Steven Curtis Chapman called “I will be here.”
The SBC is often behind the times with media, but stick figures and windows movie maker? Even they aren’t that far behind!
<-- Passes Richard a beer and cracks one open himself.
I am tempted to rant as if I was mad (being an SBC pastor and all), but I couldn’t catch my breath.
However, one small objection: there is no “higher up” in our denomination, other than the Holy Spirit. Our ‘hierarchy’ begins in the local church. Those chosen for office are chosen to serve, not to command.
But anyway, keep ‘em coming!
Thank God SOMEONE is doing SOMETHING about the alcohol blight that is biting the church in the butt! Our post modern permissiveness and so called liberty is killing people out there. I encourage every drinking believer to stop being a wuss and rethink their position on this one.
The very best part was when he sang “I don’t want to fall down...” then whispered “on my rear...”
That cracked me up. A lot
Knowing this video is a satire, I’m not sure what to say to the people who apparently took it as a rallying cry...or the people who actually got mad at it.
Do people really think so little of Southern Baptists, that they wouldn’t even put it past them to make this kind of video?
Apparently both sides are wusses. Teetotalers are testosterone-deprived wimps, and drinkers are spineless with no convictions.
Dudes,
Tim Hawkins is a Christian Comedian who writes parodies on a variety of popular Christian and secular songs.
The SBC did not solicit this song, it has been out for years.
Check out some of Tim’s songs on youtube or Godtube. “Cletus take the Wheel” is one of the funniest you will see.
And BTW I don’t drink beer, I like being sober!
Cute song, but they wasted their money on a theolgian. The song makes me want to buy stock in Budweiser.
yes nice video that is.
