The Top Ten Most Irritating Phrases to Use in a Message

Orginally published on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 8:29 AM

Researchers have compiled a list of the ten most irritating phrases. See how many of those you use in your daily communication. I know, at the end of the day, I personally will absolutely need to stop using some of these phrases. After all, it's not rocket science, and, with all due respect, I shouldn't of started saying these phrases in the first place. I guess what I thought would make me fairly unique, at this moment in time, make me look absolutely stupid. It's a nightmare 24/7 for me. I hope you understand. Oh, and here are the phrases you should avoid:

1 - At the end of the day

2 - Fairly unique

3 - I personally

4 - At this moment in time

5 - With all due respect

Wait... there's five more...

6 - Absolutely

7 - It’s a nightmare

8 - Shouldn’t of

9 - 24/7

10 - It’s not rocket science

What phrases really drive you crazy?

You can read more here...

    “In my opinion . . .”

I generally tune out the rest of the sermon from that point forward.

The phrase I wish people would stop using:  “It’s all good!”

Only delusional people say that and believe it.

It bugs me when a pastor/speaker demands we parrot back his last words to make sure we “get it”.  Am I a bad person for never obeying this command?

    “Can you say _______?”

    “Let me hear you say______>”

    Contemporary

    Cutting Edge

    Postmodern

Can’t we just finally take that for granted by now, instead of it being the alternative, and be fluid enough to move with culture change without thinking about it?

Number One with a bullet- “IT IS WHAT IT IS.” Also, any phrase or illustration a preacher tries to pass off as new, or as if you can’t remember a year ago when he dusted it off then and used it. Oh, and any reference to “Adam and Steve.”

Share what’s on your heart tonight or if John is going to tell about how he became a Christian, he’s introduced as John’s going to share his testimony with us.

“God, I pray that you would speak and let me get out of the way.” EVERY WEEK!

I had a pastor that used to always refer to “the good news of the Gospel.”

Wow.  Looks like anything I say has the potential to irritate someone.  Thanks for making me self-conscious (lol).

“Irregardless"-- It’s not a word, irregardless of how many people use it.

“Literally"--If everything was as literally true as people say, there’d be some pretty weird stuff going on.

  • “If you’re here today...”

My church has a gym that we call the “Christian Life Center” but we shorten it to the “CLC” We had a pastor who would call it the “CLC Center.” We had another pastor who used the words LIBERAL and Homosexual (both he mispronounced) like he had a quota for the week. The same guy used to ask for an Amen after each point he made. In reality, I personally got so Literally sick of hearing those two words 24/7 that I absolutely couldn’t stand it. With all due respect pastor, Its not rocket science to learn some new vocabulary or at least use the english language correctly. I guess that at the end of the day, he was from Arkansas, and it is what it is, no more no less.

It sounds as if too many of us are at church to correct the pastor rather than being there to hear GOD. Some sermons may have only one point or one phrase that is designed by GOD to reach us. So while we are busy being annoyed at the way in which the pastor speaks we many times miss the point GOD wanted us to get. The point that would make of us all that we were designed to become.

Really praying that GOD will speak to us and then listening for HIM to will make many mistakes disappear.
