After four months of turmoil, internal review, and mainstream media scrutiny, Skip Heitzig is set to return as Senior Pastor of Calvary of Albuquerque. Here is a press release from CA over the weekend...
Albuquerque, NM – The Calvary of Albuquerque Board of Directors Announced today that Founding Pastor Skip Heitzig accepted an invitation to return as its new and permanent Senior Pastor. The invitation and its acceptance helps to bring a close to a very public and thorough process. Since February, the Board commissioned separate audits of its financials, organization and pastoral staff as well as meeting with congregation in various private and town hall meetings. Skip will rejoin the Calvary pastoral staff by the end of July, he is currently the Senior Pastor at Ocean Hills Church.
Commenting on Skip Heitzig’s return to Albuquerque Phil Hodge, on behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff of Ocean Hills Church, announced to the congregation today, “We know that you must have a heavy heart, as we do, upon receiving today’s news. Although it will be difficult for us who love them so, we trust that you will join us as we commend them to follow God’s leading to return to the work they have not yet completed in Albuquerque. The past 2 and a half years at Ocean Hills Church has seen God’s hand at work; attendance has tripled, finances have improved dramatically to a very comfortable position with reserves, we have a fresh way of providing expository teaching of the word and a new focus on evangelism.” Phil Hodge is the President of the Board of Directors.
Interim Senior Pastor of Calvary of Albuquerque Dave Row said, “The Board is glad to report that the in unity with the pastoral staff, we welcome Skip and Lenya back to Albuquerque, and look forward to what the Lord will accomplish in the coming days. We hope the church and community will focus on our message of God’s love, forgiveness and grace, that is found is Jesus Christ our Lord.”
After commissioning two audits from national accounting firm Moss Adams and a pastoral audit from Calvary Chapel Outreach Fellowship, and receiving input from the congregation, the Board has taken the following actions:
• Resuming the practice of having an attorney present at board meetings to advise on procedural issues.
• Increased scope of the existing finance committee to make recommendations to the board on operations at Calvary.
• New inventory and security measures are being addressed at Parchments Bookstore at Calvary.
The board has also authorized a number of other initiatives, including creation a governance and radio advisory committee, to report recommendations in those respective areas.
Interim Senior Pastor Dave Row will have a media availability Sunday at 1pm. He will take reporters questions and provide additional information to today’s announcement.
Calvary is a Christian fellowship where we gather for the purpose of knowing and glorifying Jesus Christ. We desire to see all people become committed to live as followers of Jesus Christ. As the church is growing, our vision also is growing. Consequently, we are a fellowship in the process of constant development by God.

I find it interesting that the guy that couldn’t seem to let go before is now back. Hmmmmm
This is like the Enron of church transitions. Things were so lose prior to this that they found themselves in the news (not a good thing) and now they have exercised the option of bringing rigid constraints. I hope the only publicity they receive now is for what they do for the community in Kingdom terms.
Unfortunately, Kent, Calvary of Albuquerque did not “bring rigid constraints”, as you put it. They only claimed they did in their press release (prepared by the public relations firm they retained).

For example, the press release says the board “commisioned” a “pastoral audit” from Calvary Chapel Outreach Fellowship (CCOF). CCOF did ask for an independent report from Pastor Tom Stipe, a well-respected Calvary Chapel pastor in Denver. However, Pastor Stipe’s report, which was quite objective and analytical, was anything but positive about the CA situation. This report made some very insightful observations and recommendations, which would be very helpful if heeded.

But the official statement issued by CCOF did not reference or incorporate Pastor Stipe’s report. CCOF, which is headed by Pastor Paul Smith, Chuck Smith’s brother, issued a two paragraph letter from Paul stating that the audit had found no “sin or wrongdoing” which would preclude Calvary of Albuquerque from “continuing their pastoral search”.

The only snag was that the Tom Stipe report was published on the Calvary Chapel accountability blogs about five days before the contradicting Paul Smith statement was released. Paul Smith flew to Albuquerque and made statements disavowing the Stipe report, which they commisioned.

More information, as well as the Stipe Report and the CCOF statement, can be found at the Phoenix Preacher blog or the web site I edit, Calvary Chapel Members Group.

We are grateful to those in the Christian community outside Calvary Chapel, such as MMI, who have been supportive and have injected an outside, uninvolved voice of reason into this maddening situation.

This is beyond silly. Am I the only one who is thinking this has been set up from the beginning before Pete left? This does not smell right too me. We are supposed to avoid even the appearance of evil.............this does not seem right to me.
Of course I am not there.
My hearts desire in all of this has always been, and will continue to be, for healing, reconciliation and restoration; not only for the congregation but especially for Skip and Pete. Both pastors have been blessed with the gift of teaching. They each have their own unique style and an incredible way of reaching out to hearts in need.
When Pete first announced his resignation, I like so many thousands were in complete shock, confusion and disbelief. Over time, as facts trickled out, and as I continued to ask God to make things clear to me, I began to see the “behind the scenes” events that eventually led to the disintegration of our church leadership. It was a sad time for many of us at Calvary. The evidence of how carnal weaknesses can overtake even the seemingly strongest of Christians was being realized right before our very eyes. The board failed to respond to the crys of the thousands that only wanted transparency and answers to questions of moral ethics. It never happened. Even to this day, humility has not struck the core of the heart of our brother Skip. He simply apologized for his “style” of leadership, not the actual ACTS that caused and will continue to cause so much destruction. It comes across like ‘I’m not really sorry for what I did, only sorry that you don’t agree in my style of leadership”. As long as greed and power continues to feed his ego, he will remain blind, unaccountable and in complete denial. Nevertheless, he is my brother in Christ, and although I do forgive him for even that which he has yet to confess, I have to listen to the leading of the Spirit of God. In good conscience, based on all the facts and evidence as the Spirit has discerned, my family will no longer attend Calvary. We will remain prayerful not only for those that remain, but also for the board and all the ministry leaders. I pray that God will continue to reveal himself. In His perfect timing He will expose and flush out the necessary thorns that hurt the body of Christ.
And as for Pete and Angie Nelson, the Ackerman group and the person who launched the “Bringbackpete” website, I lift them up as well and thank God for their faithfulness, courage and desire to speak the truth in love. I know how difficult it is sometimes not to allow our carnality to get the better of us. I for one have had to question my motives in my response to this matter. From time to time God has had to squelch my anger. I truly want to be an instrument to help and not to hinder. It will only be in God’s strength that I and those that seek the truth will persevere. And we must all be mindful that although God raises strong leaders to tend to his flock, they are human like the rest of us. No one is perfect. We must be ready and willing to forgive and restore. For the Christian, that is the core of Christ’s message to us. It is God who is at the helm...and it is He whom we serve.
While reading Smith’s post my heart once again grew heavy for the pride that appears to be in the hearts of the leaders of Calvary of Albuquerque. I have always believed that people honored leaders when they were willing to admit their weaknesses and faults. Those that don’t do so often get humbled.
I see three victims here.
1. The community that needs Christ and yet due to the bad press that the Church earned, will have yet one more reason to reject the Church and our Savior.
2. The congregation, for not having not known all the facts (according to Smith) as things were unfolding and then calling back the same man that seemed to be behind so much of the problems that occurred. John tells us that “if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.” 1 John 1:7
3. Pete Nelson, for not receiving the full support of the leadership of the church and never being allowed to serve freely in the God ordained position that he was called to. When pastors receive the sort of treatment that Pete got from the leaders of Calvary of Albuquerque, I am not surprised at the statistic from Barna that tells us that 1,400 pastors per year leave the ministry.
Now that I see that the church has called Skip back all I can say is, “open your eyes”, and also…”shame on you Skip for your role in this from the beginning by not letting go, the church would most likely have been doing fine today if you had.”
As to the church, I remember when Jesus spoke to the Pharisees and said, “that they were like whitewashed tombs”, nice and shinny on the outside, yet something dying and stinking inside.
I stand corrected....that Barna stat is 1,400 pastors PER MONTH leave the ministry, not per year.
Regretably this is all too true in too many Calvary Chapel churches. It is the ultimate good old boy network of cronyism without accountability, financial or otherwise. A pastor says he is called of God and sets up his own CC franchise. Board members (not from the local church) happens and they are more loyal to the man than the local church. It is a sad situation and the CC in New Mexico is not an isolated case.
Great post! Keep on with your good work. I’ll give it a try when I have some suitable photos.
