What Fly is Blocking Your View?

TheflyKem Meyer had a great post over on her blog (Less Clutter and Noise) in the past week or so on staying on mission.  Kem is on staff at Granger Community Church (one of my favorite churches, btw), in charge of communications.  See if you can't relate... Kem wrote:

I saw this awhile back on thisisbroken.com. A few months ago the Mt. St. Helens volcano webcam was blocked... by a fly.

This is one great illustration of how sometimes we can't see past the spec in front of our face to stay on mission. We lose effectiveness in our perspective, our judgment and our communication when we lose sight of the big picture.

Recently for me, the 'fly' has been painful transitions and circumstances in my immediate family. Because I was so close to the people involved, I lost sight of the big picture and my fear triggered a chain reaction...

  • wrong conclusions
  • impulsive conduct
  • reactive emotions

This happens corporately, personally and in ministry. In all cases, the closer we are to the 'fly', the harder it is for us to see around it.

So, is there a fly in your ministry environment that's blocking your view? Are you making wrong conclusions because your sight is impaired? Have you lost your intentionality and moved to reactive mode?

For discussion:  What's YOUR fly?  Is there something that's blocking your big picture?  Do you need to step back from a situation to be a clearer perspective?

Well there was a fly blocking my view until it got annoying so I killed it. What I mean is this. For the past 1 1/2 years now I have felt the Lord wanting me to step out on Faith to quit this job and go into the ministry. So I did it yesterday. There’s a lot of empty blanks. But.... If he did it for Abraham he’ll do it for me.

You go for it Jeff.  You’re right, God did it for Abraham, He’ll do it for you.  18 years ago, I stepped out and planted a church.  It’s been rough at times, and it’s been great at times, but God has blessed my socks off.  Enjoy the ride!

Serious “fly” question here: We are searching for a pastor. If we called one tomorrow we wouldn’t have the funds to pay the 1st month’s salary. We are staff heavy to the tune of 60%.

Deacons and Personnel don’t wanna touch it. They say just have faith and the money will come. No one wants to call the tough shots. And this is a church that topped it’s Lottie Moon giving goal!

So, is this a fly? Do we not have faith or are we being irresponsible?

If you are staff heavy, why do you need to get a Pastor (why pay for one… no one in the congregation able to serve?)? Is your church equipping the saints for serving and leadership? If so, why can’t they do this? I assume, this is not a Senior Pastor, but an additional pastor? If you’re staff heavy, then reduce staff.  How did your church get in the position of being staff heavy? Sounds like a problem to be fixed…

    Abbey,

The WORST thing you could do is call a pastor, and then be unable to pay him. ESPECIALLY if you move him from another town. So… it might be a fly issue. Either the idea that you need a pastor is, like Bernie suggested, or the idea that finances are a mess and no one will look at that is. But of course, none of us know all the details, so who knows…

    Greetings,

Abbey, in a more direct response to your question.  The deacons need to get together in prayer and either lay hands on, anoint, and submit under a selected leader from among them (note* not a vote, but a selection).  If this does not happen then they are not fulfilling their deacon duties.  The person who takes over as pastor will keep the deacon salary until the pastor salary kicks in.  But if not getting paid is the reason no one steps in, then something is wrong with their priorities and God will not bless and is not pleased.  Without faith, God is not pleased.  But this takes prayer because you sure don’t want the wrong person in that position.

    God bless!
