Which Jesus Do You Follow?

Jesus_1Check out the challenging words to Todd Agnew's song "My Jesus".  It's unlike any song I've ever heard...  I'll bold a couple of lines that stood out to me and made me think.  It'd make a really powerful Easter song.  (You might have to re-word the 'sluts' reference though).  smile

Which Jesus do you follow?
Which Jesus do you serve?
If Ephesians says to imitate Christ
Then why do you look so much like the world?

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the arrogant
So which one do you want to be?

Blessed are the poor in spirit
Or do we pray to be blessed with the wealth of this land
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness
Or do we ache for another taste of this world of shifting sand

Cause my Jesus bled and died for my sins
He spent His time with thieves and sluts and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the rich
So which one do you want to be?

Who is this that you follow
This picture of the American dream
If Jesus was here would you walk right by on the other side or fall down and worship at His holy feet

Pretty blue eyes and curly brown hair and a clear complexion
Is how you see Him as He dies for Your sins

But the Word says He was battered and scarred
Or did you miss that part
Sometimes I doubt we'd recognize Him

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and the least of these
He loved the poor and accosted the comfortable
So which one do you want to be?

Cause my Jesus would never be accepted in my church
The blood and dirt on His feet would stain the carpet

But He reaches for the hurting and despised the proud
I think He'd prefer Beale St. to the stained glass crowd
And I know that He can hear me if I cry out loud

I want to be like my Jesus!
I want to be like my Jesus!

Not a posterchild for American prosperity, but like my Jesus
You see I'm tired of living for success and popularity
I want to be like my Jesus but I'm not sure what that means to be like You Jesus
Cause You said to live like You, love like You but then You died for me
Can I be like You Jesus?
I want to be like my Jesus

I have seen him in concert.  A lot of his songs are challenge you to authentic faith.  Good song, I think from a Godly man.

I guess now I have to find out who Todd Agnew is.

Todd actually originally wrote the song way back in 1997ish (if my memory reading about it serves me correctly). And I think that there were words that he had to change before they released it on his album or to radio (it wasn’t “safe” enough). Nothing too inappropriate, just not “safe for the whole family” or some junk like that.

I’m actually playing that song off his cd for our congregation this Sunday.  I think it cuts to some pretty deep issues about who we think Jesus really was, what He did, and who He ministered to.  I love the line about Him not being allowed into Agnew’s church.  Classic.  Would definitely get looks at my church if He came through the front doors.

We heard this song on K-Love the other morning when it was first aired for the first time. I set and listened to the words of this song and I was shouting AMEN all the way through it. I like Todd as I also do Jeremy Camp. I believe that these two guys have it going on. Alot of their songs are spirit lead and scriptual. His song reminds of the one I wrote Called “Christian Outlaws”. This song came to me because of the old church where we where youth ministers, they ignored a man one night who came in drunk and on drugs. Instead of helping him they snubbed him. They also had a lady come in one time who husband sick and behind on their electric bill, they snubbed her. They had a lady who was going there and her husband began a drug habit. Instead of ministring to the family they snubbed them. There kids who where in our youth group wanted to come to church and I was going to use the chruch van to pick them up and boy talk about starting a fight. The pastor and a deacon who was their family member jumped on me and told me NO.... They told me to let them help themselves. We left… Because if Jesus was here today he would not have treated these people like this. Sorry guys for rambling on....

I’ve only just recently caught on to Todd Agnew.  “Grace Like Rain” was the first song of his that grabbed me.  “My Jesus” is so on the mark.  Not all that long ago I got into it with an elder at a board meeting over our church “allowing” the men of a recovery ministry just up the street to come to our services.  He thought we should be “working to attract more families and people that are more like us"(his words).  Having been involved in a Celebrate Recovery ministry for seven years, I bristled and rose to the bait.  He got more than he bargained for.  It certainly wasn’t my most gracious moment but some things have to be dealt with in very direct manner. I hope we never forget that for the first couple of centuries of its existence, Christianity was known as a slave’s religion.  Every time the Church opens its arms to common folk it prospers, when it strives to be more respectable its most shameful moments are soon to follow.
