Sad. True. Spot on.

Worship leader? What’s that? The guy or gal that leads the singing? I guess that worship is something you have to enter into which means that somewhere there is an exit otherwise one wouldn’t have to reenter it next Sunday. Once one is between the entry and the exit they are smack dab in worship. There are amplifiers, high voltage, and personal mic’s in worship and once the exit is found..tinnitus is part of the blessed afterglow. I enjoy good music but to reveal something of myself I don’t feel very ‘worshipful’ after repeating some cut and paste cliche from the ‘Christianlike phrases thesaurus’ eight times. The worship leader sways in glazed eye rapture as words like ‘awesome’, ‘mighty’, and ‘Lamb’ turn into nonsensical syllables to me and I struggle to remember their meaning. In my confusion and frustration I remember that I will be partaking in communion in a few minutes and I’m losing my grip on the English language.
I thought that worship was something that happened when I looked at my seven children (and one daughter-in-law) and can hardly contain my thankfulness to our Father who blesses me richly. I thought that worship was part of the wild and lonely feeling I get when I stare deeply into the ebon night sky shot through with glittering diamonds of light...and then with my heart in my throat consider the intellect that made me so small and space so big. When I put my fingertips at the pulse in my throat and flet the rhythmic flow, evidence of my beating heart, and thanked God for life and breath and everything I thought that was worship. I thought when I considered the needs of the vulnerable mom or child and came alongside to encourage and remind them that a loving God is still high on His throne that this was worship.
I guess worship has an entry and an exit. It is a corporate activity that needs a leader and probably has bongo drums. I have tragically misunderstood worship. My bad.

I guess my density on this issue comes from trying to connect current practice with the role that music played in the early church The ones who received support in the early church were those who labored in the propagation of the good news. Music didn’t seem to be on the radar as an ecclesiastical profession.
Also, so much of the music environment in various congregations is aimed at creating a certain ambiance. I wonder if ambiance is a good target to aim at. There is not much that is spontaneous or real to it. Most attendees become acclimated to X number of fast, hot tunes followed by the cool-off of several more mellow songs. The ‘worship service’ (that is what it is called) travels for a certain length of time. Does true ‘worship’ look repetitious and time constrained like this. I get your point about the created creatures falling down and crying ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty continuously but maybe that is more a picture of the continuous attitude and condition of the heart of every creature in heaven than say for instance vain repetitions. What differentiates the repetitions of the Quran in the madrases, or the rolling of the prayer beads in the cathedral, or the chanting of a mantra in Hindu Temple from the overabundant, excessive reuse and repeat of churchlike phrases in contemporary christian music. This is a relatively new musical problem in churches. Check out the last 1000 years of ‘church’ music to see for yourself if this is true.I think I am saying that it looks to me like the emperor has no clothes and well meaning fellows like you are trying to reassure me that he certainly does have clothes on because all the other worship leaders have concluded he does.
Look, I see tremendous value in collecting all of the hearts in a church gathering from their various concerns and problems and beginning to unify and prepare them for the Word of God but that process doesn’t begin when folks ‘enter into worship’ (singing). It begins when they roll up to the property and are greeted with a smile by a parking lot attendant and then when they enter the building when they are warmly greeted and inquired after...and every subsequent encounter. They begin to shed those things that encumber them from receiving manna from God.
