Would You Rather:  Organ or Taco Bar?

Orginally published on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 5:30 PM
by Todd Rhoades

We've had some fun the last couple of Mondays playing "Would You Rather". Here's this week's question: Would you rather go a month with 'all organ, all the time, every service' or clean the church bathrooms after the youth groups annual taco bar fund raiser?

As always, please submit your answer (and please, do justify it) below…

    i’ll take the bathrooms!

  • Here’s the thing… if they’re eating it at the Taco Bar, they’d leave before the bathrooms were a complete mess. If it was Taco Bar followed by lock-in, and the whole church rather than the youth group, I’d probably have to go buy some earplugs and choose the organ. Otherwise, it’s bathroom hands-down.

Just a note on worship.  We did a study on what “worship” is at our church.  If you follow the definition, it really means “sacrifice”, and a few other things.  Is it really worship when we gather for our church services?  Or is it just praise?  They have changed the title of a friend of mine from Worship Leader to Praise Leader.  At one of my previous churches I was “Minister of Magnification”, a title, I think, that was coined at Saddleback.  But I could be wrong.

OH, and as for Organ music, I think it’s fine for funerals. :o)-

It’s interesting that most folks immediately go to the worst extreme when they consider organ music. If the question had been ‘all praise band, all the time, every service’ would you jump to the conclusion that you’d have to listen to the church band who think that they sound just like (insert name of band here), but don’t?

If I could choose the organist and the musical selections, I’d choose the organ.

It’s a shame we don’t have “Brother” Jack Mc Duff, Jimmy Smith or Richard “Groove” Holmes around anymore.

Definitely the organ.....but the organist is one of my best friends. Plus guys are just gross. I have had text pictures sent to me of what comes out of them!!!!!!!!!!

“king of instruments”?  now I’M offended!

and i agree with the person who said that in his opinion “contemporary people” are much more likely to be willing to use hymns than “traditionalists” are to use contemporary songs...just sayin’.

i agree with peter hamm and the music director, worship is not true worship unless it is from the heart, in spirit and in truth. we truely or i can not worship god on cue, with any kind of music.

Depends - with noise cancelling headphones - all organ, all the time; with haz mat suit - bathrooms; without either - never mind.....

easy.  The organ as we all know when Paul and Silas were in prison singing, the organ was there too.

The thought of eating tacos while listening to pipe organ music is really appealing…

What I’ve learned in my musical studies, is that its not the music that is “right” or “wrong” as it is the motive behind the person or group who is choosing to play a certain way, or sing a certain song. I love pipe organ music, but I also have been blessed with new “contemporary” songs. Its the *words* that are the most important to God, I think. So, playing an organ loudly and not to the Lord, and “rocking out” on your electric guitar and drums would *both* be dishonoring to the Lord, would they not? I could be cleaning the bathroom for the wrong motives too. I think it all comes down to motives.

With that said, I still have to choose organ music as my personal preference. Bach was wrong...God is the king of the instruments!

This is easy. I’ll take the bathrooms. The reason? It sounds like one is related to the great commission and the great commandment. The other is about pleasing people already in the church. There are not very many lost people who would come and sit through a month of organ music no matter how well we think we are packaging it. One of the most discouraging aspects of ministry is to see people get off track on what we are here for. It is not about what we like or want. The church is on a mission to rescue lost people from hell not to make the already rescued some kind of exclusive club.

I don’t know why, but organ music has always given me the creeps.  Hand me some rubber gloves - I’m going in.

I’m guessing by some of the responses that few here have had the opportunity to worship in an African-American congregation.  Those old ladies on the hammond rock the house!

One of my children is a classical pianist and is now taking organ lessons.  I get a lovely diet of sacred organ music every day.  Beautiful, peaceful, very spiritually nourishing.

For the sake of humor, I would love to see the reaction on the peoples faces when good ole’ Grannie comes in with her pipes and begins to shake the place up a little!

Hmmm.  What a choice - the fragrance vs. the sound of a strange death.

I figure if I could attach some kind of rhythm (egad - drums???) to the organ, I could endure that for a month.

I couldn’t believe this question was posed!  Those of us who are trained musicians know the complexities and capabilities of the “King of Instrument,” Although I am only slightly trained on the organ, I am in awe of the power it has musically.  I have come to be non-judmental of the shallow, 3 chord type contemporary music, why then would you even consider comparing listen to the organ in church to cleaning a filthy bathroom.  This make me reconsider ever reading this site.

Note that I am not saying all church music has to be accompanied by organ.  AND I do think we need to use the best organists available as well as using the best guitarists, drummers, etc. for our worship music.  Only our best is worthy of our worship to God.  However, the choice to compare these two is either extremely immature or totally void of any knowledge of the capabiiities of organ music to move the human soul to true worship.

I’m a music pastor and I say give me the toilet - for one I can’t stand the stuck up, holier-than-thou attitudes that seem to come from many organ lovers (not all) but many - Although this is just a reflection of deeper issues I’ve seen enough to make me sick of the organ - I had a big ole comment card ripping me and all the other worship stuff we do and that we should use the MASTER WORSHIP INSTRUMENT (the organ) - What a bunch of garbage - I’ll take the bathroom cleaning after the taco bar even if they all had stomach viruses.

Since we wouldn’t have anyone left at the end of the month...please pass the tooth brush.

Sadly, I have to say that I’ll no longer read this site.  I’ve tried to be so open to those of you who feel worship is limited to guitars and drums or you’d rather clean filthy toilets.  For those of you who aren’t aware, there are many organ majors out there in their teens.  I’ve never said organ all the time, but would prefer something other than the music of our dumbed-down society in the place I worship--where we worship the very Lord God Almighty.  Keep your brushes in working order--things do have cycles!

I’d take the bathroom any day! A band is so much better than an organ. We’ve got the organ down to only being used for 1 hymn a month at my church and that is still too much!

I’ll take the bathroom! If I never hear an organ again it will be too soon!

  • Taco bar for sure. Always been the true winner!
