T. D. Jakes Starts news Sermon PODcast (and it’s only $14.95 a month)

While more and more churches are beginning to offer free PODcasts (audio downloads) and even VODcasts (video downloads) of their weekend services, Bishop T. D. Jakes is introducing a new PODcast of his sermons for the low, low price of just $14.95. A month.

From the ipodnn blog today… Audible.com today is expected to add sermons by Bishop T.D. Jakes—a pastor of one of the largest “megachurches” in the U.S.—to its online library. Audible will offer a digital subscription service for sermons from the megachurch, charging subscribers $14.95 per month to join “The Potter’s House Audible Listener Plan” for spiritual teachings as audio downloads, according to The Wall Street Journal. Reverend Jakes will reportedly hand out iPods to promote the service at the annual “MegaFest” which expects to accumulate over 200,000 people in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome next week.

At a time when many ministries are using the internet as a tool to share their resources (messages, videos, graphics, service elements, etc.) for free, I’m surprised at this move by Jakes.  It seems to me to be a move in the wrong direction; but I’m sure many of the 200,000 MegaFest visitors will sign-up quickly.

Oh well.

Todd

The issue isn’t that charging is bad—it’s that podcasts are usually free! Moreover, they spend money to reach people on TV what pays for that? advertising of their product.  A podcast can be even more effective in selling products if you were to make it free because people are likely on their computers ready to purchase, and they’ve self selected into listening to your ministry already.  there are a ton of ways to mitigate bandwidth costs if that’s the issue.

All this talk about whether T.D. Jakes is right or wrong in selling his podcasts for $14.95/month is absolutely ridiculous.  Do you guys have nothing better to talk about? Millions of people have given their lives over to Christ because God was able to use T.D. Jakes. When is the last time you evangelized to someone? What are you contributing to the church? How is your own personal relationship with God? What are you doing to make it better? It just sickens me how church folks can get all caught up on something so small and make such a huge deal out of it.  Focus on what you can do to improve on your relationship with God rather than focusing on someone else’s decisions. No one truly knows T.D. Jakes, and no one knows what God has placed in his heart. Stop judging something you have no idea about. God is the ultimate Judge, so let it be. All this talking about T.D. Jakes isn’t going to change anything.  So you might as well leave it alone and do what you can to make sure YOU’RE pleasing the Lord. Enough said.

    God Bless you all.

It is OK for this site to charge for their services.  It is their perogitive and we should not be moved by their actions.  There are so many other wonderful sites that do not charge.  Praise God!!!

I have been watching this money thing in ministry for years. One thing I have found out being a traveling minister and one set to win souls and advance the Kingdom that it cost money to spread the gospel around the world and feed the poor etc. BUT what I have noticed is that we have ministries like KCM that regardless of their huge budgets make their conferences free, podcasts free and seem to be a blessing also along with selling some materials to put revenue back in the ministry. The other group I noticed charge for almost everything, their conferences and then have the nerve to take up 2-3 offerings after you’ve paid to get in. I personally wouldn’t pay for a monthly subscription of something that most ministries provide free but people will sign up for it any way without a thought. I believe a greater faith and trust in God lays within those ministries who regardless of their huge budgets find ways to get the word to people free of charge. I don’t think this is evil or the ministry is bad I’ts just confusing to see ministries of equal size do the same thing for free. There is a time to charge for something and a time to provide free of charge, lets pray our leaders will learn to have a better discernment and I pray Gods people would have some discernment also and stop throwing money at everything that comes out.

I can kind of relate to others, only because there are several mega church leaders (Joel Olsteen) who offer podsact free.  I would love to have been able to listen to TD Jakes at work, but 14.95 is a bit much for this single parent.  Maybe in the future he will allow chosen messages (maybe 1 a month) that others like me will be able to enjoy.

I believe who steals bread is not a thief , therefore the word of god should be given freely, please td jakes let us listen to the word for free

Ministers who are in positions to make the word of God freely available to the people should do so. What ever happened to “freely you have received, freely give?”

As someone said, these pastors - especially the “mega-pastors” - are well-paid by their churches, and therefore money does not need to be the bottom line when proclaiming the gospel.

To add some clarity to the matter, all we have to consider is how Jesus or Paul or any of the apostles would have gone about the business of feeding the sheep.

I say this because the servant is not greater than his Lord, and those who are fully trained are just as their teachers are. And I know that just as Jesus and Paul etc sought every opportunity to preach and teach the word freely, so should it be today.

    - Michael.
