Today’s Buzz:  Old Folks, Plagiaristic Pastors, New Podcasts, and Ted Haggard…

Today's Buzz includes Ted Haggard, some hip old folks, 33 podcasts Christian Leaders should be listening to, pastoral plagiarism and more...

Comments on Wal-mart
There were some good comments on my Wal-mart post yesterday.  I realized that not everyone would agree with me; and that there would be some ‘Wal-mart is the Devil” comments.  I don’t always want everyone to agree with me (how boring would that be?) but I want to provoke people into thinking about their own local ministry.  If I’ve done that, then I’m happy.

Ted Haggard Makes the “100 Unsexiest Men in the World” List
Link here… He came in at #98.  More Loathesome than him:  Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Bob Saget, Newt Gingrich, The Geico Cavemen, and #1:  Donald Trump.  Whatever.

More Talk on Pastoral Plagiarism
I always find this discussion interesting\.  Bottom Line:  Do you liberally use other’s sermons in your church?  Why or why not?

33 Podcasts Christian Leaders Should Be Listening To...
Yes, that’s the title of this post.  How in the world would you ever get anything done listening to all these?  (Besides, it might cut into the time that you waste reading my posts here at MMI, and that’s NOT a good thing!) But maybe you’ll find some new ‘gold’ here in this list from Waiting in Athens...

My Generation:  They’re not all grumpy!
These folks look like they’d be a fun group to work with in a church.  OK, except for the last guy.  (Note… if you’ve never gotten any sign language flashed at you while you’re driving, or think Chuck Swindoll is vulgar, please stop the video before the last couple seconds).  The interesting thing is… the combined age of the group in this video is supposedly over 3,000 years!

Still a ways to go to help my son Taylor on his missions trip… Maybe you can help?

Have a great day!

I followed the link regarding plagiarism by using others sermons, and I read the comments.  I must admit, I’m having trouble reconciling 2 things in my head.  The idea of being “Kingdom Minded” does lend itself to allowing others the use of all work, including sermons and sermon notes.  But, does that make it “too easy” for a pastor to stop dwelling in and learning from God’s word?  It presents a bit of a conflict for me because, as a huge proponent of giving away everything we possibly can as a church, are we causing our brothers & sisters to become lazy by not doing any of the work on their own?

I agree with the lazy caution Shadowette, and there are several others. 1) not going to well to hear from the Lord on behalf of ones own congregation.  Finding something that would be valuable for your congregation is different from hearing from the Lord about what your congregation needs.  2) Deception isn’t a kingdom mindset.  It’s fine to share with liberality what the Lord has given us, but if, even by ommision, we allow people to believe someone elses words are our own, we are guilty of deception . . . and that is anything but kingdom thinking.

    1) Got word today that our Wal-Mart is remodeling… They’re doing away with the fabric & craft section. *coughs* Stupid move. Of course, there’s already a group launching complaints at the management. Yep.... reminds me of churches.

    2) “100 Unsexiest Men in the World” List - just as I suspected.... it should be 99 men and one woman. I will leave my real thoughts on this to myself.. until later in week… I feel a blog comin’ on.

    3) Would love to hear more input from pastors on this....

    4) 33 podcast??? Good list but........ time.... lol

    5) Hilarious video!

    6) Praying for Taylor! Our youth are going on a mission trip soon. Our church is considering them as missionaries in need of funding and prayer support. The youth have so much training they have to do, community service time, can only miss so many Sundays and Wednesday nights, and etc.... One of the coolest things is they have to write their supporters letters from the mission field. They also have to serve them breakfast the day they leave. Oldest son and hubby are going. Again.... praying for Taylor and all who contribute! Teenagers are some of the best witnesses for Christ I know. Some of the best leaders too.

So is it OK for lots of churches to use same VBS materials?  The difference is????

i know plenty of pastors who have no problem with others using their sermons, especially in light of the resources found on the web...i am concerned, however, about folks preaching sermons word-for-word while passing them off as something God “gave” them in private time with them...the people i minister to are totally different from the last church i belonged to…

i’m covinced that pastors need to seek God and His word and give the word God gives to him/her for the flock...sermons outlines and sermon annuals are fine and work for many pastors...my dad uses them from time to time and it’s well known...no chicanery or hoodwinking to speak of there...he’s not passing off the sermons/outlines as his own...there was a nasty scandal in washington d.c. in 2002-03 when a well-known pastor admitted to doing just that..

ultimately, pastors need to seek God and His guidance...my favorite verse to meditate on before i study the Word in preparation for a message is Luke 24:27...Jesus has never failed me on that one---or anything else for that matter, lol...peace out

I’ve known several pastors who routinely preach other’s sermons, and do little study themselves and they don’t give credit to their sources.  I call this unethical.

How is this different from using curriculum published for that purpose? I think that’s fairly obvious.

If a pastor does not have a word from God to bring to His congregation, why get up front at all?
Why not just play a tape of the other guy?  It would probably be more effective.

I appreciate Steve’s comment because it got me to thinking about expectations regarding children’s ministers.  We expect teaching pastors to hear from God about what their congregation needs to hear, but do we communicate that same expectation to children’s workers, Sunday School teachers, small group leaders?  Do we pray over what we should do for VBS?  I think often in these ministries we have the attitude that it’s ok to just purchase some curriculum and go, but the teaching pastor must hear directly from God on his messages.  I’m not advocating plagiarism, we need to give credit where credit is due, but I don’t think it’s wrong to use ideas, concepts, sermons from other ministries shared for that purpose.
