Today’s Buzz:  “Straighten Him Out Right Now in the Mighty Name of Jesus…”

Today... we'll look at a cynical take on MegaChurches, some 'exclusive' Joel Osteen videos, CCC asks everyone to sell their possession(s); and Thomas Road's giant nine-foot tall, fully functioning iPod...

Detroit Pastors Ask God to “Straighten Out” Richard Roberts
Pastors from Detroit called for accountability and integrity at Oral Roberts University and asked for President Richard Roberts to resign at an event that was billed as a rally in support of former professors who are suing the college. The Rev. Charles E. Williams II and Pastor David Bullock, both with the National Council for Community Empowerment, led the rally at Morning Star Baptist Church in Tulsa. They spoke at the beginning of an annual Oklahoma Baptist State Convention meeting on Monday night. Neither the church nor the convention sponsored the rally, which, in addition to convention members and three other people, was attended by one of the professors and his family. However, the convention supports removing Roberts from the presidency, said the convention’s president, Pastor John Reed of Oklahoma City. Williams prayed for God to “straighten him out right now in the mighty name of Jesus.” SOURCE

Cynical Article on MegaChurches
The article starts out:  “What in heaven’s name has happened to church?  How did the sleepy sermon with hymns and an organist suddenly become a multimedia sensory assault with a full band, giant-screen TV and pop music that feels more like Saturday night than Sunday morning?  At the risk of sounding blasphemous, Jim Twitchell says it’s all about mass — not the wine and wafer variety, but masses of worshippers willing to fill the offering plate.” Just a tad bit cynical for my taste.  Nevertheless, I’ll need to pick up a copy of his new ”Shopping for God” book to get a better opinion overall.  READ MORE HERE... (Matter of fact, I just ordered my copy!)

Beliefnet Has some “Exclusive” Joel Osteen Videos
I know Joel is a big hit with many here.  Now you can hear him speak on “The Power of Positive Words”, “Making Happiness Habitual”, and “Looking at the Bright Side” You can watch them all here if you like...

Community Christian Church Asks Everyone to Sell a Possession of Value
Dave Ferguson writes, “As a part of our Retro series today the Big Idea was all about the materialism of the 80’s.  Since we can’t stand simply “talking” about this kind of stuff we asked people to really DO something about it!  We asked every person that is part of Community Christian Church to sell a possession of value!  We set up an account on eBay and mission fish asked that over the next two weeks that everyone at CCC make a clear and radical declaration that they will not give into materialism and sell a valuable possession.  I love this!  Here is how we defined greed:  “when it comes to the choice between my comfort and someone else’s need, I pick my comfort”.  That’s greed. Where will the money go from all the stuff that we sell on eBay?  Good question.  It will go to some real needs that are far more important than our comfort.” Great idea, Dave!  Read more here...

Thomas Road Church Features “Fully Functional Nine-Foot Tall iPod”
OK… I realize I pick out weird stuff from legitimate articles… but this is from a press release from Thomas Road Baptist Church.  The main point of the release was to taunt the fact that TRBC was the fastest growing church last year in America, even after Jerry’s passing.  But this is what stood out to me… Following in his father’s footsteps, Jonathan Falwell also continues to preach on Thomas Road Baptist Church’s television program, seen in all major markets across America. His current teaching series entitled: “iTruths: Life Lessons for the iPod Generation,” delivered in the shadow of a fully functional nine-foot tall iPod(R), will soon appear on the church’s national television program.  Wonder what Jerry would think of the 9 foot iPod?

That’s it for today… have a great one!

Todd

Definitely praying for Dave Ferguson and all at CCC. It is my hope and prayer that they won’t just stop with one possession.

I have other thoughts about your buzz for today, but I think I’ll keep em quiet.

Hope your day is a good one Todd!
